I know we're still in the midst of the C/O 2018 application cycle, and to those still waiting for good news, hold strong! That said, I know there must be a handful of you who are go-getters, dreaming of June 1st, and in hot pursuit of the coveted "first batch." For those ambitious few, the winter break is a great time to start crafting your personal statement so it can be refined to near-perfection when the cycle opens. I know for some, me included, drafting a PS was one of the most challenging parts of the entire application process.

KittySquared made a thread like this last year, through which I found a few individuals to look over my essay. I honestly think my PS was one of the stronger parts of my application and found the feedback I got was invaluable. I've got a little time on my hands and would be happy to return the favor to any pre-dent on here who wants some feedback on their essay.

Chime in if you're also willing to proof some essays and I'll add you to this original post. I know doc toothache's offer is ongoing, so I'll add him to the list right off the bat.

A few notes of advice - Please attach your personal statements as .doc or .docx files to emails. The character limit for the PS is 4500, so try to adhere to that requirement. In word, you can check the character count by going to tools --> word count --> character count (with spaces). Your PS should touch on who you are, why you want to be a dentist, and why you're qualified to enter the profession. If you're bored writing it, the reader will definitely be bored reading it!

Good luck!

Please only email people on this list (updated 4/16/14), even if you see their name below.

Count me in [email protected]

I have a pretty striking story myself, so I'm curious to see everyone else's.
I really believe that the personal statement is one of the most important aspects in one's application. Without it, the school's applicant pool will just be a boring list of GPAs, DATs, shadowing hours, club positions, etc. (Which I imagine would be soo similar between each one of us). The PS would really seal the application and make your application stand out (or sink) among other applicants.

Shoot me an email if you want: [email protected]. I'll do my best to give my opinions without having to intrude much with your message and writing style.

Glad you're keep this trend alive. I'm so proud of you generous folks! I will see how my summer schedule goes. I may be able to help out around then.

I don't have a lot of posts on this board, but I have been reading consistently on this forum!

I'll be applying ASAP this upcoming June, so count me in! Would love to get feedback and provide feedback!
I'm excited to write my PSE.

Keep up with the strong work. Glad to see my legacy still continues here. Lol

Bumping this - feel free to PM me if you want on or off the list. I'm removing myself for about a month while I work on NHSC stuff. I'll be happy to look at several more when that is submitted.

guys, really sorry for this dumb question... but is PM same as "start a conversation"? Just wanted to make sure because I don't want to publicly post my PS on SDN and let the whole world see it...

Should there be a designation between dental students/incoming dental students and predent readers? I only suggest it because there seems to be a few people offering to proofread that haven't applied to dental school yet (which is great help for grammatical errors, but may be misleading to some people who want opinions on content)

Just wanted to let folks know I'll be working on these in the next week. I have received about 40 e-mails :whoa:

I was thinking the same thing. I'll try to comb through the thread this weekend at some point and separate out the obvious ones.

Good luck to all.

jesus. and here i was starting to feel bad for letting my response time lag to a couple days.

i got eight requests yesterday alone.

Seriously I have gotten a ton! I'm trying to get to them all but it's rough with working and summer classes 🙂. I promise to get to these ASAP to all of you who have sent me yours already. I would like to change up my contact info - instead of a PM, people can just email their PS's to [email protected] (that is a zero, not an "o") as an attachment. Also, if we are being grouped into pre-dent/accepted, I am a pre-dent.

Yea, this last week they really exploded. I think I have some from January unattended to...haha, so much for being early 😛

haha wow that's crazy. Didn't know there were so many lurkers. Who's free and not swarmed with PS to edit?

I'd like my personal statement read but have a question. Has anyone worried about having their personal statement stolen by someone claiming to be a personal statement reader? How would someone gaurd themselves from that? I'm not saying anyone here has done it. I'm just wondering if it's happened in the past.

Not trying to start a war. I think it's awesome everyone here is so willing to help out. Just curious.

^ I am sure that's definitely a possibility. That's why you should try to find someone who has already applied to dental school and got in. And your personal statement is suppose to be well...personal. If you write a personal statement that really reflect the stuff you did for your EC, then it shouldn't get stolen that easily. That's my strategy anyways.

When I made the thread I was concerned about the same thing, but decided to leave it up to the writers to discern who they felt comfortable sending their statement to (based on post history, content, whatever). But I think you're right that people offering up their assistance should probably be those who don't "have a horse in the race." I went through, albeit briefly, and marked those members who I'm fairly confident are accepted students. If anyone reads this who wants to offer their services, just clarify where you're at in the process and I'll make note of that on the original post. On a related note, if anyone feels they've been inundated with demand that can't realistically be met, let me know and I can remove you from the list.
