personal statement sites...pls help!!

Does anyone know websites with good examples of dental personal statements? I want to get some ideas of what it should be like. I need to write it in the next two days. Thanks!

ok here's the thing: ad coms have to read baJILLLIONsssss of personal statements. if everybody talks about diversity, dentistry is more than money, and their strengths, then i could see how i would go insane having to read 1309487 million of those same essays over and over again.


SOOOOOOOO, my best advice to you is to make your personal statement into an INTERESTING story. then you can tie your strengths into it. start out with an interesting story, or something (anything!) that is interesting and can catch the adcoms attention (but not in a negative way).

i started my personal statement talking about one of the saddest/shocking patient cases i had ever seen.

How you stand out is by actually writing a good essay. The vast majority they have to read are total junk.

Am I the only one that thinks the dental personal statements on that website are all crap? Every single one of them has the same writing tone and the introduction is almost identical among all of them as well.

i agree with you on most personal statements being junk though. ive had to read a lot of personal statements for friends and they have all been utter crap. it seems like people ignore the question of why they want to be a dentist and always default to writing about why they want to save the world and why they would make a good dentist. the personal statement strikes me as an exercise in ones ability to follow directions.

It's not all crap. I liked one paragraph in one essay. Let's face it. Bio nerds don't write like english lit majors.

I read some of the personal statement and they all talk about how they shadowed in dental office and loved working there, helping people blah blah blah...
They already know that you shadowed, worked as an assitance, or volunteered for 500 hrs....etc. They are not asking you to repeat what you wrote otherwise they would've just asked copy and paste the application 😀

Yes your application has all the activities and volunteer work posted but like Albuterol stated, your PS will explain what you learn from them that pushed you into the direction of dentistry.

Let me guess, you had a bad experience as a child with a dentist (ie, bad filling), now you want to change the world thru dentistry. Or you magically realized the impact of a smile and want to give people a better smile.

yea if i wanted my personal statement to read like everyone else sure, then I would write about that.

ok...im confused now. i started writing about my experience in shadowing a dentist and my childhood experience with a bad dentist...now i think it's a bad idea. what other topics, themes are better? your feedbacks would be greatly appreciated! where can i find examples of good dental essays?? plz help!!

Well, there's door number two. You observed a "transformation" as a dentist gave her patient a better smile. You saw how "meaningful" an experience it was when she can smile for the first time in her life! Like...for the first time in her life!!! EVER!!!

That's the problem with finding example personal statements. You copy other peoples' ideas. There are only really two personal statements in dentistry. Bad experiences, and giving the world a smile.

Let me ask you this. Do you know why you want to go into dentistry? If you do, then you don't need to read other peoples' personal statements. The biggest reason why people want to read other people's personal statements is because they want to find a good one and copy it. Take their theme, their development, and what have you. The reason why my own personal statement isn't on DMDstudents is because I know many, many people will take things from it.

Seriously, the best way to write your PS is to not read others and just write your own. I didn't even bother looking at other essays because it has nothing to do with me. Your reasons to be a dentist is different and its best that you make it personal rather than cliche.

that was NOT the case with me. I gave my personal statemtn a lot of brainstorming and thought and i wrote it. I didn't copy any person's personal statement and i didn't get ideas from anyone. then after i was done, i came here and saw that that's what most people write about!...so i wanted to see examples of statements to see what people write so i dont do the same thing.

You already wrote it though, thus by confirming it will it cause you to scrap your PS? Probably not since you've placed so much work into it and if that is the case your PS should have it's own original story eitherway.
