How early is too early to start working on your personal statement?

I am done with my B.S., will start taking my pre-reqs this spring, but I feel like I could start writing parts of my PS now (Some good ideas running around my head). How early did you guys started working on yours?

Pros/Cons on writing it early?

Knock yourself out

I scrapped mine like 3 times and did 5 major overhauls after that...

if you write it now, u will most likely be able to submit june 1st next year. if u submit jun e1st, you will mostly likely be able to get interviews before october15. if you get interviews before october 15th, you have a chance of getting accepted relatively early. if you get accepted relatively early, you get to chillax with less stress for a longer time

As long as you review and revise before you hit submit, I think that'd probably be fine. 😉

Thanks for the advice..., love all of your responses 😀

Whats the length of the P.S?

I started mine in February, had a pretty decent version by April, and I provided it to my letter writers (some will ask for it, some won't).

I polished it during May - very minor tweaks.

June 2 (or 3rd?) gets upon you before you know it, and there are other things to deal with in May, like filling out the actual AMCAS, ordering transcripts, following up with letter writers...you don't want to be writing the first draft of your PS in May...

So I think starting now is a great idea, but give yourself a deadline of, say, April 1, and stick to it...the only caveat being that you will get SICK of your PS over time, even if it is a pretty good one.

5300 characters, including spaces

Mine ended up around 4400 characters, IIRC. Don't feel the need to make it 5300 characters unless you really need that much space to convey your theme, story, etc.

Would he not also need to have the MCAT done by then to get interview invites?
