hey guys,

so the topic of my PS is about this patient and how this dentist help treated her. I was wondering if it is okay to write about it? I dont want to violate the privacy between a dentist and the patient. i didnt use the patient's name but i did use the dentists name.

should i pick a different topic?

Don't mention any names and your good. I also mentioned a patient that I worked with ni my PS, and simply never stated her name. Best of luck! 🙂

Can you use first names of patients?

Why not just change their names altogether? It's not like it would really matter if ADCOM thought the patient's name was "Bob" instead of "Bill." Then you'll be sure that you are protecting yourself from whatever liability issue of using a patient's name. It's the lesson learned that is most important, and as long as it sounds genuine and truthful, even just saying "my patient" would probably suffice.

I could be totally off, but shouldn't you write something more about you?

That's who they want to know something about. This is your chance to say something.

For a generic PS I can see what you're saying.

But sometimes I think it's okay to use a story or situation as an opener to grab the readers attention and make "you" unique. This is how I started mine: I described a situation where I was riding in a helicopter over the Mts of Afghanistan treating a patient. Along the way him and I bonded and I gained his trust as his provider. Even though it was medical in nature I used it to describe two important points in my PS.

I enjoyed building relationships and comforting patients through stressful situations as their medical provider. I also used it to describe how I got on the path to dental school; I realized I wanted to continue my education to expand my understanding of science and health sciences in order to investigate health careers as a civilian. Without this story, which is really just a snap shot of my experience, the following paragraphs would not be nearly as interesting.

Knowing based on experiences is a lot more persuasive than "thinking" things or making declarative statements about yourself without supporting information.

So this situation, which reads like a quick 1 paragraph narrative in the beginning of my PS, sets the arch of why and how I have become a dental applicant... followed with supporting information of course.
