How much can you talk about a person who you helped in the hospital in your personal statement (without violating the HIPAA law)? I wanted to write about an individual going through a chronic illness (and my journey with them), but not sure how much detail I can provide about them.

You should never use the patient's name, the hospital at which they were treated, the city, or any information that would identify the patient. If you would like to use a name, then pick a random one, and put it in quotes the first time that the name is mentioned (eg, "Jane").
