Does anyone know where I could find some examples of personal statements or if anyone is willing to share theirs (of course someone who isn't currently planning to apply)? I am about to start mine and was hoping to get a feel of how they should be written.

Appreciate the help!

Wouldn't that end up making your statement a little less, uh: personal?

In all seriousness, though, I don't know why exactly but when I wrote my personal statement it wasn't easy but I was definitely not at a loss for ideas, words, etc. One thing I did before I sat down to write it was I thought A LOT over a period of a couple of years about what I was going to write. Once I sat down last summer, it was easy to outline it. Of course, the actual final composition went through countless iterations and took 2 months to finalize before I sent it off.

Perhaps you write one yourself, and then ask dentists, colleagues, and d school admin committees what they think? Perhaps if it needs work, part of their advice might be some samples they share with you?

Sorry I can't be of any more specific help. I don't feel comfortable publishing mine to the internets.🙁

Write it yourself. It's entirely open-ended.

Generally focus on three things:

Why do you want to be a dentist

Why would you succeed in dental school

Why would you be an asset to the community as a dentist

This isn't an exact script, mine actually deviated from this quite a bit, but its a good starting point.

Remember to 'show' through examples from your life rather than only 'tell'.

Good luck, you have lots of time to perfect your letter.

Best advice would be to just be honest and if dentistry is really what you want to do, words will just begin pouring from you. Do not over think it; just go for it. Also, have a few people review the statement before you submit it.
