I'm putting the final touches on my Personal Statement, and just wanted to know what your opinion on one of the things I kinda want to include.

I wanted to address the issue of why I want to go into optometry as opposed to any other field. I talk about wanting to be in the medical field, about how important the eyes are to everyone etc. etc.

My question is whether I'm going to sound silly or stupid if I say that I like the retail aspect of optometry as well, where I can help a person pick out glasses/lenses suitable for them or that make them feel better/look better etc. I guess I want to say that I like the idea of glasses or sunglasses not only for their medical/heath aspect, but as well as for a fashion purpose.

Now that i'm typing it sounds kinda silly, but I guess u'd have to know me as a person to see exactly what I'm talking about

Anyway, please let me know what you guys think...

Thanks!

I would slant it more than you like the idea of being in medicine while at the same time running your own business/optical boutique. I'd go with that slant more than the fashion thing...

If you could say that helping patients pick out glasses/sunglasses will make them feel better about themselves and that it is actually somehow related to their mental health then i would vote yes.

If not, i would leave that out...

It's not that theres anything wrong with fashion, it's just that many people who are in the field consider optometry as very medicial and professional.

Of course that's why I want to be in the medical profession, I just think that the "fashion"/boutique aspect of it is an added bonus. With the right eye wear or even switching a patient to contacts might help a patient be more confident in a way. I've seen it happen, that's the only reason why I'm mentioning it.

I know people who are reading the professional statements are pretty much reading the same things over and over, I guess I'm just looking for a way that I'm different without sounding shallow...

Anyway, this is just a thought. Might sound ok in my head, but i'm just asking you guys how it soudns to you.
