I am naturally a quiet person who is never the one always talking; however, I would really like to do EM and am troubled that this may interfere with my residency chances. Everyone says that EM folks are outgoing and extroverted, but I truly enjoy the nature of the EM field and would like to hope that I can fit in somewhere. I have much experience in EMS and have been fine in that environment so I'm hoping it can translate to the ED.

People in EM (and in all fields, really) are looking to match residents with whom they would like to spend the next 3+ years. Being quiet isn't necessarily a bad thing per se as long as you are personable.

Every field has doctors of all personality types. You figure out if you like the field and can do well in it, not if you fit the stereotype of the field.

As long as you are easy going, work well with others and have thick skin you can do well in EM. It’s not a requirement to be a social butterfly so long as you go with the flow and don’t let anything stick.
