Personality of a Program

I've been hearing how programs look to see if you are a good fit with them, as though they each have a different personality. Do programs vary that much from one to another?

I'm a third year med student thinking about doing peds residency in California. I'd love to hear if anyone has any input on what they think are the personalities of the different California programs!!
