Just thought it might be interesting to find out the personality types of the pre-meds on this board. Maybe we can see a common link or find something cool.

I'll share mine: INFJ.

Take the test and post your type and comments!

INTP when I took it 6 years ago.

INFP when I took it last week. I think I've become "softer". 😉

What do you guys think of the idea that personality is linked to career choice? Our personalities may influence us to pursue one career over another, but once we have our mind set, does personality really matter? It seems to me that dedication and love of our career would keep us going, not some supposed match between career and personality type.

And besides, we have all kinds of patients, why not all kinds of doctors? We learn a lot from each other as pre-meds, as med students, and as doctors. We stress diversity amongst people in the health care professions, and a variety of personalities would only improve patient care.

Keep posting your results and any comments!

INFP Well, according to that website it looks like I will be in child psych or neurosurgery... 🙂

ISTJ (introversion, sensing, thinking, judgement)

I just checked out the second link posted... I am interested in Ob/Gyn, and there is definitely a correlation with my score!

I'm INTP, although I was interested in neurology (the top one for me), I'm not all that interested in pathology or psychiatry... maybe I should change my personality one of these days +pissed+

ISFP...well anesthesiology is 6th in this category but I don't think I'm interested in the top 5! I guess we'll see!

Interesting to note that all those who have replied thus far are Introverted. Does this say something about pre-meds or just about those of us who hang out on SDN? Any extroverts out there wanna speak up?

Okay, I'll submit mine, too. I am an INTJ and I am interested in Cardiology. It is 7th on the list for NTs. For what it is worth, I used to be interested in Neurology (did a bit of research in associated fields).

ESTJ for me... We're not all introverts!

i'm ISTJ.
seems like i'll be either a GP, IM, GEN SURG or OB/GYN. i'm actually interested in endocrinology, which is not listed, but it's a subspeciality of IM.

i got ESTP....., but i'm not too interested in aerospace medicine, lol. well these tests are pretty interesting though... have fun people

I'm another ISTJ.
But I'm not interested in any of mine until No. 5, GP, or No. 9, Gas.

ENTP

Hard to polarize one's self like that but i guess the key words fit.

I think it's really cool that medicine appeals to people of all personality types. I guess there are a lot of STJs. And I wish I were a J sometimes...especially when I'm cramming for exams or writing papers at the last minute. 🙂
I'm an INFP. I don't think I could do child psych - way too emotionally draining.

ENTP too =) hmm, as for career choice, i'm pursuing music production and neurology...guess that kinda fits my personality code?

I'm ISTJ. I like anita taylor's book because it couples personality traits with your values in order to help to determines what speiclaities you shodul oook into. this is important espeically fro me beacuse since i have a family, I am looking a a speicality with decent hours. that was a value in antia talyor's book and conseuqently a field like OBGYN didn't come up but path and rads did. however with the personality only OBGYN did come up. it turns out that i am interested in infertility first and foremost whcih is a obgyn subspeicalty but when i start med shcool i'll start to wrestle with working out finer details and see how much i can balance family and work, etc.

Here's another link of common careers (rather than just medical specialty) for the different personality types. Take these with a grain of salt, though. They are just suggestions, and you can definitely excel in a career that does not appear on your list.

And I agree with IrishOarsman, it is hard to classify yourself with just those four letters. And again, your type should not restrict your career choice. If you love medicine, go for it!

Another ENTP. It's funny because I've always been interested in Neurology.

ENFP like Hawaian Bruin! I never considered Psychiatry, maybe I should!

INTJ baby ! For whatever it's worth, I've received this result from other personality type tests as well.

INTP. I am capable of pleasent conversations though.

I am a ISFJ (Introvert, Sensing, Feeling, Judgment) I am interested in peds and I think it was 7th on the list.

Ha! I'm ENFP as well. Yay! 🙂

ENTP here.....well, well:

"Careers which respect these traits include photography, writing, engineering, computer sciences, research sciences, entertainment and law".

...plus neurosurgery is on the list. Cool (as naively oversimplified as it is).

INTP 5 years ago, INTP 1 year ago, and INTP today. I guess I'm stuck. 😛

From Typefocus: Problems for the INTP, especially those having a theoretical basis such as cancer research, are seen as puzzles waiting to be solved.

That's actually what I've most been considering doing. Weird.

INTJ baby! i've always wavered between an INTJ and an INFJ...

Careers which have appealed to INTJs include all branches of pure science (physical, life, social), engineering, medicine, computer systems and law. (from typefocus)

That's pretty interesting seeing as i'm a bio/comp. sci double major and i'm really interested in continuing to do research while in med school!

i think the main question in a meyers brigg type is what the middle two letters are: in my case either an NT or an NF. there are names for each one (but of course i have forgotten) I know that NFs are councilors and NT are archetects... not sure about the others. anyone remember?

I'm an INTJ. 😀

The four temperments are Rationals (NT), Idealistes (NP). Artisans (SP), and Guardians (SJ). At least, that's what keirsey.com says.

I haven't seen an ENFJ yet, which is what I am. Strangely, I was an INFJ about 6 years ago. I guess some of my best friend's extroversion rubbed off on me! I always knew about the NFJ--I'm definitely one of those sentimental, idealistic ppl...but the I--> E change was interesting.

All the "NJ" specialties definitely hit home...I love children, and child psychiatry was right up there. Who knew neurosurgery is in my crystal ball for the future? 😉

This was cool...thanks to the OP for the idea! It's interesting to see how many SDNers are STPs and I's....

Add one more ISTJ, but S was weak so maybe INTJ...I'm also interested in OB/GYN, but more high risk OB (which is somewhat like internal medicine)---makes sense according to the ST and NT lists

Cool site 😎

ENTP here. Very weak on all except the N part, which seems about right- I've taken these things in the past and always got different answers.

Not interested in ANY of the top correlated specialties... 😛

I'm an ENJF going into pathology. People that know me always think I'm looking for the most patient involved speciality and are generally suprised to learn that I'm more interested in research.

However, I know there are a few SDN'ers that think pathology is perfect for me😛

Me too. ENTJ. Going into some sort of pediatric specialty......
