Nerds, losers, loners, partiers, conservatives, liberals, sluts, bloods, dweebs, wastoids, dickheads, righteous dudes. Pretty much everyone. Of course, you will find plenty of people who will tell you that pathologists fit a stereotype of a sullen loser who sits in the dark, but it is not hard to find someone to fit any kind of stereotype if you look hard enough.

Yes, that's why I'm asking on this board what kind of person goes into pathology. I have often heard from many people outside of pathology that it is the "sullen loser who sits in the dark" who goes into pathology, yet as a medical student, I've found pathology to be the most interesting subject thus far, even during third year. I have also found the pathologists to be the best educators in medical school. I would think that pathology is filled with people who are very curious and interested in how of things work. Also, I'm wondering why the Step scores aren't as competitive as one would think given pathologists are most interested in basic science and Step 1 tests just that. Thanks.

sullen loser who sits in the dark

Aren't radiologists the ones who like hanging out in the dark? I prefer my sitting areas to be well-lit.

let's be nice to the med student, everyone. we were all there are one point too. pathologists are good pre-clinical educators because we have the clinical background, way more than the PhD anatomists, biochemists, microbiologists, etc. you'll find many excellent educators in your ms3 year too. while there is an element of the "how does it work" in the practice of surgical pathology, it's far more about diagnosis. pathologists are diagnosticians first and foremost. we provide information that helps guide clinical management of patients - sometimes this is in the form of a direct diagnosis (ie, metastatic adenocarcinoma, consistent with a prostatic primary), other times it's more indirect (ie, we tell the clinician there are eosinophils in the urine, and they have to decide if that means there is an acute interstitial nephritis). step scores aren't as competitive as you might think because the money in pathology is less than in many other fields such as dermatology, radiology, and surgical subspecialties. step1 has very little to do with the practice of any actual medicine, rather it serves as a screen for residency applications because grades have become so meaningless and uninterpretable. step 1 remains the single thing every US resident applicant has in common.

hope the above helped answer some of your inquiry.

Yep. That's why you hear from people outside of surgery that all surgeons are gunners and rude, and from people outside of pediatrics that all pediatricians love to play with children, etc. Be very wary of what you hear from people outside of fields (especially when they generalize), they often are talking out of their ass or are coming at it from an uninformed point of view. And yes, there are sullen depressed losers in pathology, and there are plenty of antisocial misfits. There are plenty of almost every personality type. I'm sure if you analyze personality data of thousands of physicians you will find that pathologists tend to be more analytical, less competitive with each other, and some other things, but trends never apply to a single individual.

Don't worry too much about the people who go into pathology. Just find a speciality you will be happy doing.

I was wondering what kinds of students go into pathology. Thanks.

If you really like Pathology (or any specialty for that matter), but aren't sure how you'll get along or fit in with them, do a rotation! Shadow! Get in there and see what the department is like. And don't let the nay-sayers get you down-- path is awesome. 🙂
