If you've been rejected from a school is it possible to petition to be re-reviewed at all?

A friend of mine got rejected from a school despite a seemingly stellar application. She has some serious connections to the schools (a family member used to be on the adcom itself) and after calling them up to ask why she was rejected she some how got put back into review.

I doubt this is a common thing but is it possible for people without connections to get back into the review process after a rejection?

doesn't hurt to try. all they can do is say no...which wouldn't change anything

is there some process for it like sending a letter or do you just call them up and sound like a psycho premed?

I sent a letter to one school last year (I was waitlisted at) and didn't help a bit. Interestingly enough I didn't even get an interview invitation this cycle from them. Doh well, UTMB was my first choice anyway! 🙂

Most schools will indicate that a rejection is final and not subject to review. However, this is not universally true, so you have to check each school's policy in that regard.

Yes, rejections are final which is why if you haven't heard anything yet and are expecting a rejection in the Spring, it can't hurt to have your "connection" make a point of putting in a good word for you.

I remember reading somewhere that UCSF actually has a formal petition process for the committee to re-review your application following a rejection.

Edit: Found it

Appeals

Applicants who do not receive a secondary application or an invitation to interview may appeal the decision of the Committee on Admissions by writing to the Chair of the Admissions Committee at the Admissions Office. Please note that applicants who have interviewed are not eligible to appeal because their files have already received final Committee review.

This is true for UCSF. Alwaysaangel did just this and I believe was granted admission. You can find her MDApps where she discloses the letter she sent to the DoA.

IIRC, she actually did this for UC Irvine. And I don't know that it was a formal petition, more like just 2-3 letters of intent. You might be right though.

Well if you're talking about our lovely UofI, remember at least for the undergrad they had that secretive appeal process. They just didn't bother telling anyone that didn't have connections about it.

Hahaha maybe if I have a politician write me a LOR? haha
The person who told me why I "might" have been rejected didn't give me an answer that I thought made an ounce of sense. I'm torn between sending them a wth? review me please! letter (of course I'd be more eloquent) and just letting it go because obviously the U of I system has some admissions issues.

Thanks Bacchus for letting me know about that MDapps thing. I think I may send a letter of interest kinda like that to a different school where I'm on hold and still very interested in attending.

i was rejected by a school, sent them letter telling them how interested I am

they reopened my file and later granted me an interview

waiting for their decision now

did you address why you were rejected in your letter and try to explain yourself or did you just write a love letter to them?

well its easy for me to pinpoint why i get rejected from schools so I just wrote a letter where half was explaining why i want to go to that school and the other half talking about the weakness in my app and how i have made up for it

Someone on the RVU thread applied, interviewed horribly and was either rejected or waitlisted (can't remember). He "petitioned" them and they granted him another interview. After which he received an acceptance.
