Hi. I am looking for any openings in CA-1 spots, preferably in the Northeast to be near family. I am a US IMG starting my surgery internship in July. I passed Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS with no problems. I have no red flags. I am very motivated, a hard worker, and a team player. Please PM me for any opportunities. I look forward to speaking with you.

Obligatory US IMG is a “red flag”. Is it a surgical prelim position you’re starting?

Good luck.

Yes, I am starting a Surgery preliminary position in July.

Why are you starting a surgery prelim position without an advanced spot? Did you not match? If not, why? You mentioned you have no red flag, but US IMG combined with not matching the first time around alone are red flags going forward...

This is a red flag applicant until proven otherwise. I wouldn’t specify any desired area of the country - it will be hard to find a spot at all, you’ll need to be flexible.

I did not match, I Soaped into this preliminary surgery position. I am trying to figure out my situation on why I did not match by discussing my case with my advisors and mentors to get a better light on the issue. I applied widely as I was advised (70+) and interviewed at 7. In my situation, is being a US IMG the biggest red flag or what other things should I look for in my application?

Step scores is probably the only thing that will help you. Pulled all the stops out, if you have connections use it now. You maybe another casualty of US IMG grad.

May need to adjust think about FM/IM NOW, rather than anesthesia.

This.

OP. You mentioned that you passed all the usmle. Step 1 average for us grad matching anesthesia is above 230. For US IMG, i suspect it is significantly higher. How did you do on step? Did you barely pass, which then isn't surprising that you didnt match, or did you get 240+?

if your scores aren't strong, i would strongly consider IM and FM. Good luck.

Step 1 230
Step 2 CK 238

According to NRMP match report from 2018, average US IMG who matched was Step 1 231, step 2 237, likely has gone up since 2018...

I have strong letters of recommendation, as per one of the PD's mentioned in one of the interviews.

So that’s the average.....
If I had your score, your chance is just about as good as calling heads on a coin flip.
There may not be much to figure out. I standby what i said. If you want to practice medicine at all, in general. Have some backup in IM and FM. If you don’t get anything this upcoming cycle, you may not have much of a medical career in US.

Edit: op, your story is not unique, nor will you be the last one. We “all” think we can overcome adversity..... but not everyone will make it. Good luck!
