Hey guys,

Got two questions:

1) Where can I find a list of all the PGY 2-4 EM residencies? I checked SAEM and FREIDA, but SAEM has only 3 listed and FREIDA requires me to look up every single website of every single residency to figure it out. I don't mind doing that, if I have to, but if there is an easier way, I'd sure like to know.

2) Is doing an audition rotation in January too late? I know ROLs have to be in by Feburary, so I wasn't sure doing one in Feb was a good or bad idea.

Thanks!

Most people will probably tell you it's too late, but I did one as a last minute decision in February and they told me it was a strategically good time... I did well and matched at that program, btw. 🙂 So probably not traditional, may not really be recommended (may be hard to breach the higher ranks of a ROL if the programs have favorites from previous auditioners), but definitely okay!

Advanced:

Prog Code Institution Name Program Description ACGME Code Quota Options
1921110A0 Kern Medical Center-CA Emergency Medicine 1100512001 7 Details
1484110A0 Lincoln Medical Ctr-NY Emergency Medicine 1103512053 11 Details
1049110A0 UC San Diego Med Ctr-CA Emergency Medicine 1100521080 8 Details
1957110A0 University Hosps-Jackson-MS Emergency Medicine 1102721073 10 Details

Excuse the formatting. Those are PGY2,3,4 NOT including PGY1,2,3,4. I did the search on ERAS.

As to the second question... I would say Feb is too late. They've already had to certify one rank list already I believe, so the one in Feb is their "last chance" and if I were a PD (and I'm laughably not...) I don't think I would want to do lots of major changes to my list a week prior to submitting the final ROL. I also don't know what you mean by "audition rotation" (do you mean away rotation?). If you mean doing a 2 week rotation at the program AFTER your interview, I consider that overkill. What if you don't like it after 2 days? What if you decide the PD is an a**hole and the residents all hate you and give you wedgies after your shifts? Well then you've wasted 8 days of a perfectly good rotation that you could have used doing 2nd visits to 4 other programs. See what I mean? I think 2nd visits are fine and if that's what you're insinuating, then my personal strategy would be to rotate the day before an interview day. That way you are fresh on their mind when they are discussing all the applicants that day and shuffling them into some sort of order. I would think it would be a good opportunity for your name to pop up and for you to get re-shuffled but that's a completely arbitrary guess on my part. I would recommend doing 2nd visits during the first 3 weeks of January. That's my 2 cents.

Out of the advanced residencies listed only four remain as solely advanced programs:

Jackson/MS (is this only a 2,3,4? didn't interview here.)
Kern- 2,3,4
UCSD- 2,3,4
Lincoln- 2,3,4

Boston Medical Center, USC, Cook County have all switched to becoming primarily 1-4 categorical. I think it's a trend that should all but wrap up the remaining residencies that are advanced. People don't want to do a transitional/prelim year if it means doing more floor months. 👍

I wouldn't recommend doing an elective in February. The latest January. If you like a program a lot, do a shift with the assistant PD or PD sometime in early Jan to mid January. The elective could be a double sword if done that late + you are a 4th year and I would plan all the heavy stuff early on.

I believe the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa also has a PGY 2-4 advanced program. Not for sure however as I didn't apply there, just at other programs in the general area (midwest/south).

University of MS in Jackson, MS IS a 2,3,4. Although, personally I like to call us a pseudo 2,3,4 as we now have 7 total 'EM Transitional Year' spots......There are 10 2,3,4 spots each year...
