I am a chief resident at the Dean McGee Eye Institute/University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. One of our incoming first year ophthalmology residents will not be remaining in the program because of extenuating family circumstances. The vacancy will likely be posted on the SFMatch website today or tomorrow.

It is not my position to act on the behalf of the residency program as this vacancy is filled. Nevertheless, I am happy to answer questions regarding the program. This is a wonderful place to train with great attendings, high surgical volume, and a rock solid education in the practice and profession of ophthalmology.

Not posted on the SF match site yet. And I'm not quite clear, is the position opening for right now, starting PGY2 2007, or is it that someone who recently matched with you for starting PGY2 in 2008 won't be able to attend at that time? Fingers crossed for the latter.....

I apologize for any ambiguity. The available position is for a PGY-2 spot for this current academic year and would require completion of internship by July 2007.

Will you guys take a 4th year med student?🙂

Just kidding... But I've heard y'all have a great program.

hi there... just a couple questions:
1. do you guys plan on holding interviews, or will it be a pretty quick process given that the academic year has already started?
2. usually openings like this are filled very fast, and usually by internal candidates - do you have any internals who are potntials for this, or do all people have an equal shot?
3. how many people have shown interest so far, and how many do you expect to be applying for this?
4. when will the final decision be made by?

i have heard nothing but praise for your program.. i really hope that things can work out for me here... thanks in advance...

I am happy to see your interest in the vacancy. That being said, I do know the answers to your questions. May I recommend that you direct these questions to the program director. I believe that if you are currently in a residency program, you must have your program director's permission prior to contacting another program director about a vacancy.

Hi Mira,

I am also very interested in the position. Is the vacancy still open? Will the applicants be contacted?

Thanks

MissZ,

As far as I know, the vacancy is unfilled. I believe that all applicants will be contacted. Please take a look at the SFMatch website for the contact information of Sherry Ross, the program coordinator. I would recommend contacting her directly to express your interest. Good luck! It's a great place to train. I am currently working on the oculoplastics rotation with an attending who loves surgery. Today we did 1 orbital decompression, 1 pretrichial brow lift, 3 DCRs, 3 wedge resections, 2 BULBs, 1 bilateral direct brow lift, 2 medial canthoplexy surgeries, and 1 ectropion repair-finishing by 5 pm. Residents are expected to participate fully in the OR, even when patients are private patients of the attendings.

Thanks Mira,

Sounds like a great place!

I have heard stories about the very strong religous convictions of some of the faculty and how they sometimes have become part of the training program? Have you experienced this?

Many of the faculty members at DMEI live their lives in accordance with their religious beliefs. These beliefs include humility, forgiveness, kindness, friendship, and compassion. They also include the pursuit of excellence, hard work, and integrity.

Admittedly, the faculty members are not perfect. Nevertheless, I have been impressed with the quality of character displayed by the various faculty members. My religious beliefs differ to some degree from each member of the faculty. That being said, I have never felt discriminated against because of my religious beliefs. I have never witnessed or heard of an occasion when a faculty member's religious convictions became part of the training program.

Two of the faculty members trained with J. Lawton Smith in Miami. They have adopted his practice of praying with patients. They are respectful of the differences that may exist between their religious convictions and the convictions of their patients. They do not force their beliefs upon the residents. I view their prayers as sincere expressions of concern for the health of their patients.

I am curious about what other residents would say but I would find that very uncomfortable to be in an exam room while that was taking place. Just because J. Lawton did it, doesn't make it right either.

Hi Mira,

Thanks for all the info. I was wondering if you could comment a bit on how much surgical exposure there is in each year of training. It sounds like by the third year there is a lot, but I was wondering how many surgeries are done in the first year and second year as well. Are there certain days a week devoted to surgery? Also, it sounds like by the end of training graduates are well prepared to practice general ophthalmology. Do many pursue fellowships? It sounds like graduates are successful in obtaining fellowships of their choice.

Also, is the position even still open? I sent my info last week but didn't get a response. Is that because there is an overwhelming number of applicants?

Thanks for all your help!

MissZ,

As far as I know the position is still open. I figure they will tell us once the position is closed. I do not know the number of applicants nor do I know what the approach will be regarding interviews, etc. Sherry Ross, the program coordinator, will be the best contact for those questions.

Regarding surgical numbers, I will briefly summarize the surgical exposure here at DMEI. The numbers vary slightly from year to year and from resident to resident so I will try to provide average numbers for the graduating resident.

Cataract ~220-250
Cornea 5-15
Strabismus 40-70
Glaucoma 5-10
Retina depends on the resident's interest
Oculoplastic 100-150
Globe trauma 20+

All of the residents perform lasers and intravitreal injections, no need to list those.

Half of the residents pursue fellowships and half do comprehensive. I don't know of any problems matching into a great fellowship.

just to let everyone know... this spot was filled without even an interview process... and by one of their own surgery residents no less.... why bother even listing it and making 30 some odd people apply.... man, this is frustrating...

I was perusing the sfmatch site and saw a PGY1 vacancy announcement at University of Louisville for 2008. Apparently updated 7/19/07. Thought y'all would be interested.
