I used that part of the application to explain why my GPA was low my freshman and sophomore years of college. I didn't write anything dramatic, just a simple "these are my grades, I know they aren't perfect, but since then I have grown personally and professionally and have made wiser academic choices that are directly reflected in my junior and senior year GPAs" type statement. It was very short and to the point.
