Hi everyone,

I can't seem to find a lot of info on this. Have you heard of any schools that have graduated their first class but did not get fully accredited? What happens to these students? Has it ever happen? If you dont know, please point me into the right direction in finding these things out. Thank you.

Anybody please correct me if I'm wrong-- I recall reading a post about Loma Linda and UCSD not getting full accreditation for this year (surprisingly!), but their recent graduating class was able to sit for the exams because these schools were already obtained candidate status......

Thanks for the reply. Does anyone else have any input???

yes, that is true, as long as the school achieved candidate status that protects the students and gives them the opportunity to take the test. i have known people from UCSD who sat in the test and passed it and is now working . and if you have any question for some particular school, you should look into their website and read up on accreditation, or even go to the ACCP (sp?) and check out their rulebook on accreditation procedures.

Is this really true? Can anybody else confirm this? I really want to know because I had an interview at Touro and is still waiting for their decision. Touro got their candidate status.

I'll confirm it! 🙂 All graduates of LLU are able to practice pharmacy like everyone else. It's stated clearly on ACPE's website. I'm just too lazy to find it.

I don't know if this is true, but one of my coworkers told me this week that Howard's pharmacy program has been suspended for a couple of years. She has a couple of friends that are currently 3rd and 4th years and she heard the news from them. just wanted to pass this info. along so if anyone is interested in this school, do further research to find out if it is indeed true.

Do these 4th years know what will happen once they graduate? I emailed ACPE concerning this issue so i'll post it here once i hear back from them. See, i can understand why they would let UCSD students take the boards since its a pretty established school. I just wonder about completely new schools like Appalachia. Thanks for everyone's input.

its true about Howard U being on suspension. They are just on suspension for a year (till June 2007) till they can bring up their standards. Those currently in the 4th year are allowed to graduate and take the boards, but if the standards are not improved then the school is closed down( not realy sure of this but thats what i heard) and the students are let go. i read it a while back but dont seem to remember when.

A friend went there last year for interview and totally regretted it. He said they didnt have pple to interview and were pulling other instructors from different places (nursing instructors etc) to perform the interview and they were also disorganized

The issue with Howard is that they are on second year of probation. A college can only operate on a probated accredition technically for two years. We have to wait until the Spring/Summer to see what will happen to them for next school year.

I got a reply from ACPE and here it is:

ACPE Candidate accreditation has the same rights and privileges as full accreditation status. Below is a definition of Candidate
status:

A new program that has students enrolled but has not had a graduating class may be granted Candidate status. The granting of
Candidate status denotes a developmental program, which is expected to mature in accord with stated plans and within a defined time
period. Reasonable assurances are expected to be provided that the program may become accredited as programmatic experiences are
gained, generally, by the time the first class has graduated. Graduates of a class designated as having Candidate status have the
same rights and privileges as graduates of an accredited program.

In other words, students can qualify to sit for the NAPLEX and become eligible for licensure if they graduate from a Doctor of Pharmacy program that has Candidate accreditation status.
