My dream school won't notify candidates until probably march or april if we're accepted. I can't afford to pay the deposits in other schools to guarantee a seat when I'm really hoping to be accepted in my in state school. However, if i don't pay the deposit and I get rejected from my dream school im screwed. 😱 Any advice? im so nervous. Can you share what u guys are doing?

Well im going to suck it up and pay for my second choice that accepted me even though its a grand.... i cant afford to loose that spot and not get into my school which also is waiting til april. The way i see it is that it will cost a whole lot more than 1000 to wait another year.

better be safe and put the deposit to guarantee you the seat. The amount you pay now will not even come close to the benefits and rewards you get from pharmacy school. So if youre not sure... just put the deposit anyways

You just have to suck it up and find the money somewhere.

Instead of making a $300 payment to my credit card Im making a $50 payment and sending the rest to NOVA. Oh well! Theres always next month! 😀🙄

In the long run making deposits is better than losing your 2nd choice school!

If you have been accepted to 2 or more schools so far, I would only pay the deposit to the school you liked the most. This way you will be secured in knowing that you still have a seat somewhere if your dream school falls through.

I paid a $600 deposit to the first school that accepted me while I wait to hear back from my dream school. Are you expecting a tax refund? If so, you can use that money to pay the deposit when your dream school sends you that acceptance letter 😀

My advice is to put all your eggs into one basket. Life is all about gambles and it will make your life much more interesting. No, in reality check to see if they offer any reimbursement if you pull out. I know CCP offers money back at a certain % depending on how long you wait after your deposit to commit elsewhere. If not then you have to put your money down....unless you wanna reapply next year.

You should pay the deposit. I at one crazy point almost held three offers at different schools because they didn't require me to pay the deposit outright, but you really should try and get it sorted out. Take a loan out if you have to - it's worth the investment. The alternative would be to have no pharmacy school acceptance whatsoever, which would be to say the least, tragic.

Pay the deposit. If you can't afford it, then you can't afford pharmacy school. Not paying the deposit would be an ugly mistake...imagine how much it's going to cost you to wait another year to apply if you give the acceptance schools the shaft then your 'dream school' gives you the shaft.

after reading everyones post its clear that i should guarantee my seat with my second choice. I have spent so much money already but all of you help me realize it's best to make the deposit and fulfill my dream.

If they pay the deposit and later decide not to go to that school, the seat is then open for another applicant. Depending on where the school is on filling their class, they may either have the 'extra' seat available when the review the next group of interviewees or they may give it to someone on the waitlist.

You can hold it just up to when you pay the tuition, but it's a really awful thing to do to the school.

No you do not get your deposit back. $2000 is a pretty steep deposit though. If you are thinking you might turn it down, I would wait until the last possible date to pay the deposit, and hopefully you might here back from another school to see if you're in.

Are you serious?! I have till next Monday to turn in my deposit, but I won't hear from the other school until a week or two after the due date. Sigh, I'm supposed to be happy today and things keep getting worse. 🙁

One deposit is nothing compared to losing out on another year and having to apply again next cycle if you do not get accepted to your state school. Do it, it will atleast give you peace of mind.

I could understand putting down and losing $500 but $2000? Maybe Wingate is tired of seeing so many people back out at the last minute that they're forcing their applicants to make that tough decision prematurely.

I'm not sure what I would do if I were in DarlingNikki's shoes. All I know is that I wouldn't want to regret, at a later time, of attending my second, third, or fourth choice school with having the knowledge that I got accepted into my long-shot top choice school. It seems unfair to ask poor college students to pay $2000 and then give them such a short time to make their decision because it's not like these schools are losing out if the applicants decide to back out. They have a waitlist full of people who'd jump at the opportunity of taking that vacated spot anyway so personally, I think anything more than $500 is just way too much.

I felt really good with the interview at the other school. I also have another interview coming up, which I had to convince my parents of letting me go to since I've already had an acceptance. They're the ones putting down the $2000, but they're going to be pissed if they don't get it back. I'm going to have to find a way to pay them back if I can't get it back. It says nothing in the letter about the deposit not being refundable, that's why I'm so confused right now.

Also, I agree that it would be extremely unfair for them to hold the $2000 (if they do) since they would fill that spot regardless. I can understand in them giving you a certain amount of time to withdraw or you forfeit your money, but not forfeit as soon as the money is sent. I feel really good about the other school. My interview was awesome, and I loved it there. It's just a really competitive school though. 🙁

You should definitely call and doublecheck whether the deposit is refundable, that might make life a bit easier if it is.

I'm a dummy. In my excitement of seeing "Congratulations! You've been accepted." I totally missed the part in the letter that says "nonrefundable". This is just so upsetting right now. :cry:

I think of it from a business aspect. They're there to make money. I don't care what your philosophy is about your school. The application process is full of fees (supplementary fees seem hardly necessary). Deposits are simply to ensure you will pay them the ~100k in the long run. They could care less about your financial ability. If you're planning on flaking with them, they'd rather take a lump sum from you than you cheating them out of a student who WOULD'VE paid the full tuition by attending.

You might consider contacting the school and see if they will give you a little extra time to decide. Some schools are a little more understanding. Don't expect a lot of time, but it might just be enough to find out about the other school.

I'm just going to suck it up and pay the money. My parents are going to pay it, but I feel horrible because they won't get their money back if I get in to a different school. If that's the case, I'm just going to have to try and pay them back. Don't get me wrong. Wingate is an excellent school. Everyone seemed really nice, and I love their teaching methods. I know I will be happy if I do end up there. 🙂

That is a bad idea. Every school out there will tell you that you are a professional now and your first act of professionalism is....knowingly writing a bad check.

They really give you no financial incentive to tell them when you decide not to go to their particular institution - by keeping 100% of the deposit, you have the privilege of retaining "your spot" up through the last minute.

All things being equal, the decision an anonymous person makes regarding their acceptance to a particular pharmacy program has no bearing on anybody else except the pharmacy program and the applicant. The fact that schools use the deposit as a revenue stream by collecting deposits from everyone that accepts, not just for the actual seats makes it a cold, harsh decision. If the deposit from someone who changes their mind could be passed on to someone on the waitlist, then we might all be a little bit more altruistic.

At the very last minute (just before classes start) it could be considered rude. But it does happen. Lots of times for good reasons - family issues, change mind about program, financial aid issues, etc.
