I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I got by pretty much my entire undergraduate career at a UC with lots of grants and loans. For pharm school, would FAFSA offer even more grants and loans for students since the tuition is much higher? Thanks for any comments/advice.

You would not be getting grants. Those are for undergrad. You would be getting loans. The money would mainly be unsubsidized loans and possibly GradPlus loans if you needed money above and beyond the $33,000/year you could take out in the unsubsidized loans. So, say your school costs $25,000 year and you decide to work during school to cover your cost of living. You would only need to accept the $25,000 in unsubsidized loans for that year. However, lets say that your school costs $30,000 and you calculate your living expenses at $15,000 for the year. This means that your total need would be $45,000-$33,000=$12,000. You would need to apply for a GradPlus loan to cover this additional amount.

What about scholarships?

I am just now getting familiar with the financial aid prospects for a graduate pharmacy student. I might be wrong, but it seems that there is less money available now than there was as an undergraduate. I was shocked to find out that pell grants are not an option as a pharmacy student.

I guess I lacked foresight on that front. Good news is - There are loans available..

So every pharmacy students out there does not get any grants or anything and everyone gets by with loans only? Are there a lot of scholarships available? (Probably depends on the school and the region you're in huh)

Yes pell grants are NOT available for graduate school. You have the options of government subsidized loans, GradPLUS loans, self-pay🙂laugh🙂, and after your first semester of school you can start applying for scholarships within your school.

Also companies like Wal-mart, Walgreens, Target etc. all have their own scholarship/loan programs you can look up if you are interested in retail....

Welcome to the state of higher education. Students get access to more loan money, schools raise prices of tuition, ad nauseum. Unless you have access to other income or scholarships it's very hard to get out of most pharmacy schools these days without 150k+ in debt. Also, it won't be getting cheaper anytime soon. I hate to see what happens when the bubble bursts and there's no more money to loan out. To compound the problem for students, there are no more subsidized loans to take out, so you're stuck with compounding interest no matter what.

FlavyFlav you go to LECOM-B right? I'm going there in August and they were talking about how they offer scholarships and what-not... how are they? Can you give me any details on scholarships or if they have work study??

There are many scholarship opportunities available. Most are grade based. Some, like the retail scholarships are just write an essay and hope you're the one picked. I just worked through school and did not apply for any scholarships, so I don't have any info to give you on them. The opportunities will regularly appear in your school mail, and if you make great grades I believe you will have no problem snagging a few.

Hi, this may be off topic, but say I applied to an out of state school and got accepted. Would I pay out of state tuition for the entire 4 year period or just for the first year and be considered instate afterwards?

Different schools have different policies. My school is OOS all four years.

My school doesn't reclassify people as in-state. If you're out-of-state, you're out-of-state all four years. Though I have heard of some schools that will reclassify you.

Thanks owlegrad and dancingallday!
