pharm school question

hi everyone, i just finished my third year at UCI. i'm set on going into a pharmacy school, but after reading around this forum, it seems that everyone has competitive qualities than i do.

i am an economics major, and i have started to take some pre-reqs for pharmacy. i only finished g-chem, and by fall i will be done with o-chem. i am going to take physics and finish up my economics requirements my senior year. i plan to finish up all the other prereqs the year after graduation at a CC. my current GPA is not very attractive. i have a 3.0 overall, and 2.5 science. i do plan to improve my grades the next two years, but that's how it is for now.

so with my overall situation, what can i do to improve my chances of making it to a school? is it possible to finish all my other prereqs within a year? what else do i need for pharmacy school? how's the application process work and stuff?

Spend some time looking at the pre-pharm FAQ. That should answer some of your questions. Then use the search function to get more questions answered. Then....come back with more specific questions - I think you're asking something which is too broad to start with....

try searching around the forums for the answers because all of the questions you asked have been answered in various posts already........

I graduated from UCI with a PSB degree. I started taking pre-pharm classes my 4th year and finished the rest of the classes at a jr. college. My GPA at UCI was a little over 3.0 (including my science grades). [BTW, I didn't do so well in the chemistry and bio classes at UCI]. At the jr. college, however, I got As and Bs and a couple of Cs. I was still able to get an interview at WesternU and actually got in. So anything is possible.

i also went to uci and was in a similar situation as you. First off, you should have an idea of what schools you want to apply to. If you go to bio counselors office, they'll give you a pink sheet of paper that has the 5 or 6 pharmacy schools in CA, and their pre requisites. The cool part w/ that paper is that they'll tell you which classes at UCI to take and you don't have to do the research on your own. That can help you plan your next year or two a little better. For me, I would rather have taken them at UCI but it's not going to do you any good if you get a C as opposed to the B or A you can get at a CC. So it depends on if you can pull off the high grades. If your gpa is avg now, at a 3.0, then if you show solid good grades for the next year or so of classes that you have to take, mainly A's, then schools will see that you've improved at least, even if your GPA raises only a few points.

If you're thinking of schools outside of CA, go to the pharmCAS webpage and browse their school listings. they'll show you the pre reqs for individual schools. This is the tedious part b/c you have to do the leg work on your own, but most of the pre reqs should be the same.

also, get to know some profs now so they'll write you a good letter of req. also, get some pharm experience now while you still have time. You can work as a pharm clerk at some retail pharmacies like sav on. There's this free clinic in Costa Mesa called SOS, share our selves. a lot of UCI students go there to get experience. I'm there now actually, let me know if you want their contact info.

But you have lots of time to improve yourself as an applicant. Start now. good luck
