Hey everyone,
The pharm tech test results are in, for those that took the test on
March 19, 2005. It just tells you if you passed or failed and I think the composite score will be mailed. www.ptcb.org
I know I wrote a thread here about a month ago saying how I thought I failed, but I checked my results and I passed!!!!! I can FINALLY start working now and start gaining some experience! I can't believe it, I SERIOUSLY thought I failed, like BIG TIME. I didn't study any drugs, and my test was like 80% drug names. WOOHOOO. Ok, I know, it's JUST the
pharm-tech test, so I shouldn't be THAT excited, but I really thought I bombed it. Ok, hopefully everyone who took the test passed. Have a good day guys.

I passed and I studied the night before and in the car while waiting to take the test...lol.. There were a few ppl I met there that had taken the test 3 times...ouch.

I thought it was a toss up when I left the test center. I thought I probably failed it but I got my:

"Congratulations! You have passed the March 19, 2005 PTCE."

when I went to the website today. 😀

Hi everyone, congrats. I would like some info about becominga pharmacy technician. I have pharmacy experience and a bio degree, so can I just take the test, or do I have to take classes too? I'm from Orange County. I would prefer to study on m;y own if possible. I would appreciate any suggestions like books to study and where to find out more info about becoming a pharm tech. Thanks in advance🙂

focus a lot on the math, it helps you out if you run out of time memorizing drugs. But I'd say that if you have taken any college level math you should do fine. I think that you have four main topics that you have to pass a certain number out of each and math and pharmaceuticals are together.

I bought it in Jan, but studied sporatically because I had lots of other things going on. I'd say I studied about two weeks total for it.

I passed, but dont know what my score is yet, so maybe it was overkill 😉

haha..me too!!! I met people there who had taken classes for 7 months and paid like thousands of dollars.. i was like, hm i studied last night? omg.. i seriously thought i flunked it like no other... i guess i can surprise myself sometimes haha ..NOT (it was probably a really low passing score) YAY 😀

Anyways, now that we passed, wats next? Do you guys know of any jobs that hire newly certified techs? I currently work at Longs Drugs as a clerk but it would be awesome if i could work as a tech! Im not sure if the CPht title is enough, i heard you had to have 'continuing education' in order for it to count..wats that all about? 😕

I went to borders books or barnes and noble for about 2 weeks and studied from a book called "Pharmacy Techinican Examniation Review" by Delmars, for about 2 hrs a day. The book has a TON of typos but overall it's an ok book. I give it a 6 out of 10. I didn't even buy the book, just go to your local bookstore and use it there, save yourself some money. Yeah, before the exam, I was talking to a few people and they spent TONS of time and money on classes so I kind of feel bad for them, but I'm sure they passed.
All of my friends who took the test said that it'd be mostly math and a little pharmacology. So I just studied the math portions and didn't memorize a single drug name. It turned out that when I took the test it was like 80% DRUGS and the rest was math, so I was freaking out while taking the test; and I seriously thought I BOMBED it, HARD...luckily, I passed!
I think someone on this forum told me that if 3 of the 4 answer choices have the same ending in a drug name, then 60-70% of the time, the answer is the one with the different ending.
(I'm totally making up these drug names)
A.) AlbuterOL
B.) AlcohOL
C.) PhenOL
D.) AcetaphemaNINE

Thus, your answer is "D". That's the strategy I used when I took the test since I didn't study the drug names and I guess it worked. I wouldn't suggest doing it this way but if you're ever stuck, you know what to do.

I'll agree with that! PTCB (pharmacy technician certification board) makes the test "guesser" friendly. I have been teaching a PTCB class for a little over a year now and the best advice I can give is to know your math. If you made it through college algebra then you should have no troubles with the math portion of the test. As far as proportions go ( 80% math, 15% drugs, 5% law) it is always different. Different colors of tests are passed out in the same session to ensure no cheating and each color represents different strengths. One could be math intensive and the other can be drug intensive. You can go to ptcb.org to find a practice exam.

Believe me....if you can make it through any of the pharm prereq's then you can ace this test without a problem!

oh yeah, I almost forgot......final scores are based off a national curve 😀
Another important note.....AZ law requires that you take tech classes (through work or otherwise) in order to be a "licensed" certified tech (law as of 03/01/04). You can study by yourself and get certified but an employer might require you to be licensed. Make sure and double check with your state laws.

I wouldn't say it was hard. I just don't like to study too far in advance. My memory has the tendency to leak 😀 . I used Joe Medina's Techlectures Manual which is actually very good. The math part is sufficient and the 200 top drugs are also listed. As someone mentioned each test is different, but ya gotta know your conversions and a tad bit of pharmacy law. I took the test with like 80 other ppl but 70% were "older" ppl. By older I mean over 50. They thought my IPOD was some sort of "cheatin machine."

I took this test during my spring break between the partying and drunking had not time to study. I finally studied for the first time the night before half drunk and somehow passed the test. I have no idea how i pulled that one off.

Is anyone else having trouble signing on to MYPTCB? I tried when I got my cert in the mail but it wouldn't let me so I tried again today and the same thing happened. It says there is no member with my certification number. Is there a place where I am supposed to sign up to use it?

I was just logged in the PTCB website with no problems. I am another just recently CPhT. I worked in a retail pharmacy for 2 yrs. and only studied the day before the test and passed in the high 800's (test is scored 300-900 possible points). I took it in Tampa at USF and there were a lot of "older test takers"(over 40). I heard a lot of people at the test site talking about how they went to school to become a tech. Waste of money in my opinion, but I guess if your an older non-trad. student, then it is needed. Im looking forward to getting a job at a hospital and doing some bulk compounding and iv admixtures.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I called PTCB. They said they are in the process of putting everyone into the system which should be done by the end of this week. They will also be mailing out a copy of our passwords soon. So, if you can't login yet don't panic!
