Pharm Tech

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Where do I sign up to take a test for the pharm tech certification.
Do you mean like the PTCB? or just to be licensed for your state? If it's the state then it totally depends on where you live. Some states require a formal program and some just require 50 bucks (or some dollar amount)
Do I need to take a course, or is it like the ACT/SAT test?
Again see above
How long did you guys study? 1 year? or is 1month sufficient. (I ask this b/c I was looking at a website and it said that you need to take a class, and the class last for 1 year).
Yes. A program, my program was through a community college and lasted 3 quarters.
What are the importants points to study?
all of them. 🙂 Know brand/generics for the top 200 drugs prescribed today. Do a google search for "top 200 drugs" or whatever.
Any recommendations on books to study?
This all depends on where you live because you may not need a formal program. But, if you need the program then whatever books they use. 🙂

Okay, so my school is more focus on medical school than pharmacy school. I don't know a whole lot about pharmacy, but I do have a few questions.

In Colorado, I attended a private school that offered a 12 week pharmacy technician course. They taught me everything from drug names to calculations and so on (I have a blog in my profile about what general info is going to be on the PTCE [Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam]). Then I took the PTCE and got certified. That was all I had to do except that I need to do the continuing education in 2 years to renew my certification.

Some states, like California, are going to have special requirements like you might need to register or get a license.

Anyways, Roto is right, it depends on where you live. By the way, which state are you from??

I'm not sure about GA or TN, but I am a pharm tech at a hospital in NC and I do not need my certification (although, I'm planning on getting it after my studying with the PCATs) to work. I just need registration with the state, which is an annual due.

FYI, I think CVS trains and pays for your exam once you're hired if you're interested.
