Hey guys so I am planning on walking into several retail pharmacies soon to look for a technician position. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this process and if anyone could offer any advice on what I should say, wear, and anything else that is relevant? Im a bit nervous because I don't have too much work experience, but I am highly motivated to get into this industry and get some experience. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Oh and just one more thing... I was looking at sample resumes online... if i passed the PTCB technician exam... can I put the title "CPhT" next to my name, or is that something that comes along with licensing? Once again, THANKS!

Almost all retail pharmacies around my area told me to check online for any job openings.. I heard if you know someone who's about to quit or about to become a pharm intern because they got into a pharm school, then you may have better luck to take their space.
But I'm sure it depends on where you live, so I recommend asking people around you to check first!

It took me months recently to get my job back at CVS as a pharmacy tech. Honestly, what I did was I called around - say to ALL the CVS's in the area that I wanted to work. There, I would just be like - 'May I speak to your pharmacy manager?' then if they're there, they'd transfer me too them. Though if they weren't they'd tell me when they would be in and the time, I would call back later then.

Speaking to the manager, I would just ask if they were hiring and explain how I was wanting to attend pharmacy school and I need some more work experience...blah, blah. Basically I would go from there. It works, honestly does.

Apply at CVS.com as well through the employment/hiring area if your wanting to work for them. 😳

you should take the PTCB. It isnt too difficult and you can just buy a study guide from any barnes and noble. The exam is offered fairly often and passing will definitely increase your chances of getting a job in a pharmacy. I took it a little over a year ago and applied to a lot of places. Finally got an interview and a job in a hospital pharmacy which in my opinion is better than retail. You will learn a lot more and dont have to deal with insurance and running the register all day.

I did take the ptcb and am certified 🙂 I made sure to do it before anything so that I could hopefully better my chances of securing a tech job. I do want to work in a hospital but I figured I wouldn't get hired because I have no experience at all...

So I went out today and got a chance to talk to several pharmacy managers... One local target was actually in the process of looking for new hires, so I left my resume and available dates. The manager said she would give my resume to HR and that I should wait for them to possibly contact me. She told me that it would probably be a phone interview... so nothing is for sure but does anyone know if they will call me and interview me right on the spot over the phone?... anyone have any similar experience that can shed some insight in the process or what they will possibly ask me??? thanks in advance

It depends on how they like your resume. If they are interested on hiring you, then you could expect a call within a week or two. If more than two weeks have passed and no interview was offered, then they probably already found someone.

I don't have any experience with a phone interview. All my job interviews were in person.

yeah, you should take the PTCB. It isnt too difficult and you can just buy a study guide from any barnes and noble .

Walk up, tell them that, and I think they will give you a shot 👍

I also had no previous tech experience before getting hired at a hospital. Also, when applying online most companies will require you to fill out a questionnaire which is created by a company called Unicru. You absolutely MUST answer every question with either with "strongly agree or strongly disagree" no matter how ridiculous it may seem, otherwise your application will end up in the abyss and never be seen by HR. This is a good link that can help clarify why as well as provide what your are supposed to answer...

To answer your question regarding CPhT: Certification is granted through the PTCB, so if you have passed their exam and have that lovely certificate, you are entitled to call yourself a "certified pharmacy technician" or CPhT. Licensure is granted by your state board of pharmacy and is a separate deal.
