This may be a stupid question but are pharmaceutical dinners unethical according to the DoD? I'm a resident in the USAF reserve (civilian residency) and we have a lot of lunches brought to our clinic and lectures at local restaurants. I wouldn't want to accept a lunch and be prosecuted down the road for accepting a gift.

Yeah, you can't attend anything. Besides, they're useless. Sales pitch with a preplanned dinner and you're lucky if you can get 2 glasses of wine out of it, which, IMO isn't worth attending as a bottle of wine can be had for cheaper at home.

Gone are the days where you can order from the menu and actually confer with colleagues.

They may, however, place your name on the list in accordance with the sunshine act. I know two people personally who ended up on the list after a rep dinner. The rep was required to record someone's name, and so he randomly picked ONE of the attendees and listed the bill for the entire meal (like $1500) as a gift to that single person. Hospital Command caught on, and called them down for questioning. Nothing came of it - this time - other than a wrist slap. However, the minute something occurs for which the DoD gets some media attention, they'll feed people like that to the wolves. Be wary.

Yep I can't accept so much as a pen or a cookie from a hearing aid vendor as a VA audiologist.....

Sorry I don't buy the hearing aids and I don't deal with crappy customer service. So your pen or cookies aren't going to sway me to dispense your product if it's crap or your customer service is crap.

I miss the days of being treated like a thinking professional....

You're in the reserve, DOD rules apply when on active orders. Residents are not reportable in accordance with the sunshine act.

Ah yeah, good point in regards to residency. Nonetheless, be wary when you're on AD.
