What opportunities are there for Pharm D's who go on to earn a law degree? Are they guaranteed a job? What's the average salary/benefits? Is it true not all of them have to go to court? What do they actually do? Is it worth the time/money investment? Can you end up working part time instead of fulltime if you chose to? How would a pharmacy student know if they should follow this path?
Thanks for the help and also please post any helpful resources! 🙂
.) attorney for pharmacists, pharmacy law professor, general counsel at CVS/wags/other big chains, possibly a lobbyist if you know the right people, maybe a consultant for new pharmacies
.) no
.) variable...i believe its mostly independent practice, depends on how much they bill clients. obviously if you are a corporate lawyer/general counsel for CVS or something you will probably be salaried. but if you are anywhere near remotely busy i assume you make pretty decent money...as a lawyer, you know pharmacists can afford to pay.
.) depends...board of pharmacy isn't really a court, but i assume almost all lawyers attend state board meetings and hearings, either representing someone or observing.
.) they are usually experts on state/federal regulations as well as case law, and represent anyone with pharmacy-related issues
.) maybe. on one hand, the cost of pharmd/JD is ridiculous. on the other hand, there's not many out there.
.) sure, you can do anything if you're self employed.
.) go on google, email a pharmacy lawyer/professor...? every rph/jd i have met (n=3) LOVES their job and are pretty friendly, i don't think it'd go as bad as cold calling/emailing normally does.
