Hello everyone, I have the opportunity to join a major LTC pharmacy chain in MI as a pharmacist in charge. I just got licensed three months ago and I read some horror stories about pharmacists getting in trouble with the BOP for everything that can go wrong in the pharmacy simply because they're the PIC...Is there anyone out there with some PIC experience that can shed some light on what would be the expectations of a PIC and what is the risk?..Also what would be the best way possible to manage a PIC responsibilities in the pharmacy from day to day?...Is the PIC responsible for other pharmacy personnel mistakes?...Is the PIC required to have his own policies and procedures and a written description of delegated responsibilities in the pharmacy or you mainly depend on corporate's training manuals and job descriptions...Please advice...

Learn to be a pharmacist first, then decide if you really want to be a PIC after a few years. Also, look around at the older/wiser/more-experienced pharmacists you know and see how many are PICs. Talk to them about their opinions.

Yes, a PIC is responsible for everything that goes on, but no you will not have to design your own policies and procedures. The chain will do that for you.

I wouldn't suggest trying to be a PIC if you don't have LTC experience. There are lots of little things that are different in LTC and are you really qualified to know the best workflow, the legal requirements, etc, etc? I hate to deter anyone from pursuing an opportunity but ask yourself why none of the current staff pharmacists want to be the PIC.

I had another opportunity to join a retail pharmacy chain, unfortunately the hiring manager is very unprofessional and is not following through on what she has promised me during my interview. Now I have to decide between accepting this LTC job or remain unemployed.

In that situation, I'd probably take the job and keep job hunting.
