I am a pharmacist who was thinking of going to DO med school. I have a PharmD and was thinking of applying in like 2 - 3 years. Im a little older than most applicants at 30. I really enjoy patient care but I dont feel I get enough of it as a pharmacist. I really prefer the osteopathic philosophy of treating the whole patient as opposed to the allopathic approach. Would it be too difficult transitioning from being a pharmacist to med school? Would I be able to work while in school? Any ideas on what schools would be best for me or how I would get started? Any physicians or residents that used to be pharmacists offer any advice? Thanks

I had 2 pharmacists in my class of 2003. Both of them did work part time during both medical school and intership year (but I don't know the hours they did). They both seemed very content with DMU and 30 is not old at all. You'll find in DO schools the average age is probably pushing 30 (unlike MD schools). I was 32 when I began and I was not the oldest by far.

Good luck.

The average is still mid-20s, but the 30+ crowd is well represented and includes many career-switchers.

I think the transition should be alright. Know a pharmacist that did that. He also worked part time duirng basic and clinical sciences. As to the age, you have no problem. GOOD LUCk.
