I was just wondering does anyone know the pharmacist prescribing formulary in FL? Do any pharmacists actually utilize this?

I've seen in the FL state law some brief guidelines of what can be prescribed... Looks like anything with an antihistamine component... or when one component of a drug (in combinations) is OTC... So does this mean things like Clarinex/Clarinex-D... Prometh-DM? Dextro is OTC? Idk... guidelines don't seem too clear...

It's not done. Pharmacists can write for a limited number of meds like Transderm Scop for people going on cruises. But, you have to keep a separate log book and jump through hoops. I've never seen anyone bother with it. The formulary is listed in Florida laws online.

I also have never seen collaborative practice agreements in Florida. It is a good ole boy network of doctors here. You won't be prescribing in Florida.

Legally we can prescribe certain things:
-oral analgesics; limited to a 6ds (for mild pain or period cramps)
-urinary analgesics- max 2ds
-otic analgesics
-anti-nausea (up to 25 mg, scop patch <1.5 mg/patch)
-antihistamines and decongestants if >6 yoa
-topical antifungals/antibacterials/anti-inflammatory
-otic antifungal/antibacterial (acetic acid 2%)
-keratolytic if >2 yoa
-vitamins with fluoride
-lindane shampoo
-smoking cessation products WITH TRAINING.
idk, this isn't my list, it was provided by a law review. Look to the BOP for the real list.

You do need to make a file for the patient, conduct a history and store it away from all other scripts. Sort of like a mini clinic. It's too much risk and unknown territory though. I wouldn't do it for lack of seeing anyone doing it. I'm scared to be the first and do it wrong.

Thats awesome. I did not realize FL Pharmacists could do that. Do you have to go through any special training or get any additional certifications to be able to do so?

Thanks. Yeah, I have checked the BOP law, but it's a little like, you know law, it doesn't state the products in black and white. You have given me a little better idea. I've been working in pharmacy a long time now, by the time I graduate and pass the boards I'll probably be in pharmacy about 10 years (started in high school)... So I figure, not that I would use it for everyone but patients that I have a good relationship with, I'd want to be able to provide that service to them if they really needed it. I think I'd be comfortable with that.

I'm sure the chains frown upon it. But I just thought it was cool, and wanted to know more lol.

Thanks 🙂

P.S. Are Multi-vit w/FL popular in FL?!? - People in NY go NUTS for them, LIKE FREAKING OUT if their kid doesn't have vitamins... I think its kind of ridiculous... especially since the one county here has fluoride in the water. The county I work in doesn't apparently.

Just FYI, you can look forward to going over the entire Florida Pharmacy Act next year. You must know what pharmacists can and can't prescribe in what situations and you must know the exceptions. Also, the professor will royally mess with you on exams because he believes whatever law exam you end up taking will do the same. Good luck and congrats again on your acceptance!
