What salary can a PRN hospital pharmacist expect to make? I recently received an offer for a PRN position at a large 700 bed hospital and therefore, I'm currently deciding if it's a good way to get my foot in the door since I wasn't able to land a residency.

Typically, prn positions make more per hour than the regular full-time/part-time pharmacists. This is usually to balance the fact that they don't accrue PTO and don't receive benefits (more often than not, the increased pay does not pay enough to cover the benefits).

It's a very good way to get your foot in the door. At least with my hospital, new positions are first offered to current employees. However, seniority is generally a major factor in who receives the position. If it's a coveted position, chances are you won't receive it if other employees want it. But this just means a different position is now open for you.

Where is the hospital located?

My per diem rate at Adventist was about $75/hr.

I worked in a small hospital per diem and it paid crap, I think like $48/hr. But I was stuck at CVS and desperate to escape retail so I took it. I never got a full time spot but it did help me get my current LTC job which I'm pretty happy with.

I made ~$65/hr in a small city in the SE. That was probably $10 more per hour than I would have made as staff.

Okay this is going to be convoluted, and warning my friend hasn’t worked here in several years so these figures are dated. That said....

Her listed budget for compensation for a supervisor pharmacist position with benefits was $164k/yr, given that this was 5 ish years ago AND the salary is discounted for expected full time benefits, the translated hourly rate of about $79/hr is likely where a per diem would sit today.

I’ll see if I can squeeze out some better numbers but our conversation migrated elsewhere.

Haha, you've been a member long enough to know I live in Central Cal! Adventist Bakersfield.

Oh dude! nm, but you changed your s/n a bit, yah? Or maybe I’m just old. Good tax move to Vegas though (and more Asian food than bako)
