Pharmacists get addicted, too

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
May be a little off topic but..Are pharmacists allowed to take their own meds without a prescription? Example: Pharmacist has Asthma; takes prescription albuterol inhaler without script...What is the law, but more importantly what is the common practice if it differs from the law? Does this vary by place of employment (corporate pharmacy, hospital, indy pharmacy..) Now lets say this drug is a narcotic: Ex: I need a vic for cramps? Or, my friend just got a toothpulled and ran out of perc afterhours, give him one? Can a pharmacist legally, or ethically, do this?

Sure law is same as in UK. Ie. Take a prescription drug out of pharmacy stock:
a) You are stealing and therefore liable to be prosecuted and struck off etc.
b) You are taking a drug without a legal physicians prescription and are therefore committing a crinimal act.

Essentially, this question is: "Is it OK for a pharmacist to steal?"

Um, no.

Yes, good for you, you used to be a crackhead. Why don't you write a book about it?

I've never used crack- not that I wouldn't have- I just never got around to it. Didn't find any behind the counter.

I should probably let negative comments roll off my crackhead back, but it just doesn't seem fair for a 2-year pharmacist-newby who has completely missed my point to slam me without a counter comment.

First the mocking Levaquin remark: (By the way, it's Levaquin) You probably won't get addicted to the Levaquin, but jacking it can certainly get you a visit from the Board and local police. It is quite illegal. It may not be a big deal to you, but it is to me. I stay away from that arena.

Through your sarcastic, contemptuous attitude, you have completely missed the point of my first few lines. I don't mention those things to sound like I am some pharmacy scholar. I mention the UK rank (and there was no droning- what article did you read??) and "being too smart" simply to exemplify that no matter who you are or where you've been, you can still fall to addiction. The mindset of many outside the profession, including my mom, is that we should know better. We should know enough about the drugs to keep us safe from becoming addicted. Obviously, that renders us no protection.

So...although I'm no super-pharmacist, I'm no idiot. Please don't judge me as such. I have written my experience, and that's all I have. I never claim to be an expert. I just share my experience, strength, and hope to those that may find themselves in the lonely position that I once found myself in. Why don't you read the book? Then come back and tell me what you think. If you still feel I'm a pompous idiot- so be it.

Jared Combs

My opinon, although no one cares, is much like some of the other posters, although I may humor the OP by reading some of the book. The statistics may be valid, but it seems as if they are just here to promote the book. It's obvious why the OP wouldn't see why these statistics may be sensationalized... he has a vested interest in book sales!

But I'll give it a chance and read some of it. It's not that I don't think addiction is important, it just seems it is being brought up here solely as a reason to push books.

BTW, whichever person commented on being a stud and a ***** at the same time....we have a name for these people....they are called porn stars. 🙄

So his entire reasoning for why he got addicted to Lortab was because he thought he couldn't get addicted? And this is after graduating?

Yeah.

I mean...ok...I don't drink or use illicit drugs (never been drunk/high in my entire life...which absolutely shocks people for some reason...) so I can't say I know exactly what it must have been like vis-a-vis the entire addiction thing...but come on...dude clearly had zero common sense coming out of school.

It's one thing to grow up in a culture of drugs where abusing them is common place (like ethanol in the US...)...but to start abusing them after graduating and knowing full well what will happen to you down the road...wtf are these people thinking...damn...

Perhaps I'll go jump off of a 5-story building and write a book about the dangers of jumping off of 5-story buildings. Really, what are we teaching these new grads? It's ok if you get addicted to painkillers, spiral out of control, and go to rehab...because in the end its all easily explained by various character flaws that are apparently only tangentially your own fault....and you get to write a book and do a speaking tour while some ******* pharmacist one state over can point out the various holes in your logic when statistics are misused...but its ok because you have a book and a speaking tour and he doesn't. It's not like I'm going to be invited to lecture at a conference with my meager PharmD and staff hospital pharmacist experiences...WTF....I want to go speak at conferences...it makes me want to go down some Lortabs to get the process started.

Jared Combs is sincerely trying to increase the awareness of addiction and help others who may be sufferring by sharing his personal experiences. I know this to be true because he helped me! I am a recovering addict. When I hit bottom it was Jared who reached out to me to offer hope and support when my "so called" friends turned their backs. It didn't cost me a penny when he contacted me upon hearing of my situation, but it was worth everything to me. When Jared shared his personal experiences with me I began to feel a sense of hope in a situation which seemed, at the time, to be the end for me. Now, I am back on my feet and living a much better life.

Now, that says alot about Jared Combs.

Cool. I'm sure he's a great guy.

But, dammit, misleading statistics still piss me off.
