Hey PharmDs - how many of you have leveraged what you learned about pharmacogenomics and driving for a specific position regarding the importance of DNA Testing to ensure medications are metabolizing as intended?

In our second part of the Pharmacogenomics Pharmacy Podcast Series – we talk with Dr. Phillip Empey and Dr. James Coons with Pitt School of Pharmacy and UPMC – out of Pittsburgh PA.

Empey and Coons explain the concept of pharmacogenomics and describe advances in scientific knowledge and technology, which have led to innovations in personalized medicine.

We talk about the implications of pharmacogenomics data in guiding treatment decisions for patients and how pharmacists can lead these initiatives of proactively leveraging DNA Testing to better manage patient medication regimens.

I'm the director of pharmacy operations for a pharmacogenetic testing lab. There are community pharmacists doing this right now. Pretty awesome.

I work in a medium sized health-system and we have recently hired a pharmacist in this area.

How willing are insurance companies to pay for the CYP enzyme and pharmacogenomic testing? We have a gastro doctor locally that does this with many of his patients. Is there something on a smaller scale that people would be willing to pay cash for? This is easily the wave of the future. For anyone taking multiple chronic medications with uncontrolled co-morbidities, this should absolutely be the first step in determining why it is that treatment is not working.

Hi PharmacistReb - Medicare consistently pays for the test - as long as it's submitted with medical necessity documentation. (Easier than it sounds) THe commercial insurance are completely inconsistent - however, if you submit the test with full documentation and a medication review form - they will also pay for the test. I have helped to get pharmacists directly involved - and those independents I assist are making money from the management of the programs on behalf of the physicians request.

Very interesting. Of all of the new things coming down the pike and being more integrated in practice, this is by far my favorite. Pharmacogenomics will eventually be the norm for everyone. If I was still in retail, I would be wanting to make this something to implement.

Just got done taking the pharmacogenomics course. It just became a requirement this year.
