Starting pharmacology next semester and book orders are due by the end of the month. There are a whole bunch of "recommended" books for pharm so I was hoping there might be some experience out there with a few of these for recommendations.

I am the type of person that uses books for reference not reading. I like a good glossary and index at the end so I can quickly and easily locate what I'm searching for. I use textbooks to supplement class notes to further expand on a concept I may not understand, but don't tend to crack them open very often.

~Goodman and Gilman's the Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics
Laurence Brunton, Bruce A. Chabner , Bjorn Knollma
~Handbook of Veterinary Pharmacology
Walter Hsu (Ed.)
~Merck Veterinary Manual
Cynthia M. Kahn , Scott Line (Eds.)
~Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook
Donald C. Plumb
~Principles of Pharmacology: The Pathophysiologic Basis of Drug Therapy
David E. Golan, et al.
~Small Animal Clinical Pharmacology
Jill E. Maddison, Stephen Page, , David Church
~Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Jim E. Riviere , Mark G. Papich (Eds.)

I'm willing to spend the money on books, I just want to know that I'm being smart about it.

Thanks!

My required text was: Pharmacology by Brenner & Stevens.

It's OK. Chapters aren't too long (UNLIKE the Pathologic Basis of Disease) and it reminds me a lot of the Biochem book we used first semester. However, in our classes the printed notes are very good and the volume of material is so HUGE that I don't have time to read a textbook when the notes are much more concise.

If you have the time to read, it's pretty solid and comes with a CD. I haven't used the online stuff, but if it gives you links to sample calculations then it could be useful. Our course is heavy on doing calculations very quickly and some people have trouble doing the math in less than 1 minute (esp. if your exams have many questions).

i believe you can access both the merck vet manual and plumb's online for free....i think plumb's is great personally

Plumb's is available via VIN, which you should have free access to as a veterinary student.

Merck is available online (just google Merck Veterinary Manual).

I bought the Hsu book and used it a fair amount for our more confusing lecturers. It was pretty good and well-organized for looking up confusing concepts quickly.

I also bought Muir's Handbook of Veterinary Anesthesia, which was helpful for both Pharm and Anesthesia. It is pocket sized, which is nice.
