In a world of perfect choice, what job is more preferable? Academia, you aren't tied to a clock and get some respect from the supervisor. However most schools have no tenure. The students are demanding and there are juggling of hospital clinical with teaching and research.
Federal clinical work has some security, with annual reviews, better benefits, but more intense work and life tied to the clock, but better pay.

Definitely federal. I have worked with professors and some of these schools make you do A LOT of work (clinical site, research committees etc on top of teaching/precepting) for little pay. As a bonus, a lot of federal jobs are now partial work from home...hope that trend sticks.
