Hey guys, just wanted to get some insight from those of you who haven't had success getting into pharm school and what you have done to enhance your chances. Right now I am entering my final year at SJSU with a poor 2.78 cumulative gpa. I know I have a lot of work to do. I got into biology earlier but was just a poor student who really had very little desire. About a year ago I started gaining experiences and interest in both dental and pharmacy. I volunteered at UCSF out patient pharmacy for about 6 months (once a week for 4 hours). This summer i got into an internship with Walgreens Mgt. program strictly on the basis of my interest in pharmacy. When i was interveiwed, I was honest with them about my interests to get into pharmacy and I guess they were impressed by that because they let me into the management internship. As part of the internship we get to work with the pharmacists for 1 of the 10 weeks (40 hours) primarily as a clerk. I met with the pharmacists here and let them know of my interests in pharmacy. I think that the fact that I went through so much trouble just to work in the pharmacy really impressed them. Nevertheless, the pharmacy manager where I work is a great lady. She really took good care of me in the pharmacy while i was there teaching me many of the things pharmacists do and should know and giving me some good advice. I extened my internship to 11 weeks now just to get an additional week in the pharmacy. I've had to go through some crap to be where I am at though, working 40 hours a week in the store is no fun task. Also, I met the District Pharmacy Supervisor and District Manager for Walgreens who both informed me that Walgreens can be a great asset to getting into pharmacy school (the DM mentioned to me how he has a relationship with the President of UCSF) and how Walgreens has scholarship programs to help pay you through pharmacy school. The reason I am mentioning so much of this is to inform some of you who are seeking to get into pharmacy, that there are great ways to get experience if you look hard enough, since we all know its hard to get into. Hopefully some of you will try to investigate this in your area's and might get into the MGT program as well with walgreens and impress them with your dedication.
But back to my original point. I have a fairly low gpa at this point and I am hoping to get into a masters program where I can raise my gpa to the point where with all my experiences it will allow me a fair chance at getting in. Hopefully in my final year, I can raise the 2.78 to around a 2.9 plus. But what were some of the routes others too in my position? I know there are quite a few people who got in with lower gpa's, but what about the majority of you who had low gpa's and got rejected. What were the steps you took to get in? If you did a masters, what kind of program did you go for and how long was it? Also, how did you manage to get into a program with your low gpa, certainly there must have been something about you that appealed to them. Just wanted to get some advice from people in my shoes since I will be applying too this fall for next year.
