How do pharmacies get paid from insurance and government insurance for the medications they dispense?

I've used pharmacy programs that print receipts out but what happens afterwards? How does the pharmacist tell the insurance or OHIP to pay for the meds? is there an online reporting system or something? or does the software just automatically do it for you?

What software do you use at your pharmacy?

thanks
I am in Ontario but I was interested in how things are done elsewhere as well

It goes thru the insurance and then the prescription is dispensed. I assume the insurance company/government either does direct deposit or sends them a check at a certain time interval.

If there are insurance conflicts, it won't go thru and the pharmacist will have to fix the issues before you dispense it. The programs are setup to connect to the insurance when you put in the group #, id #, and bin, etc. What a person pays for that drug is dependent on their insurance plan.
