I am attending a new pharmacy school this fall and I was looking for some student input:

What traditions or social activities does your pharmacy school do that make it fun?? Any ideas or suggestions would be great! Thanks :hardy:

some kids from UCSF said something about a camping trip the week before school starts and that they invite the new 1st years. That sounded pretty cool and allows you to meet people before school starts. I don't know all of the details though.

We've traditionally had an awesome end of the year party and used to invite the incoming class. That's how I met people before school started.

Can pharmacy school actually be fun? I didn't really think it could be. I just figure it's probably four years of non-stop testing and hard work. I'm going to start this fall, but I have yet to find out. In all honesty, while I am "sometimes" exciting about starting, most of my time, I view the beginning with a sense of trepidation inside. I just wonder how'll I turn out. All kinds of worries plague my mind. I'm even afraid of my hair turning white or gray because of the non-stop work like a pharmacist at a Rite Aid told me. She is probably 25 years old and she told me her hair started to turn white/gray throughout her studies because of stress. Her hair is now black again. Let's just hope there is something fun ahead. :scared:

You didn't think college was fun, either. Pharmacy school will be what you make it to be. If you decide to have fun in pharmacy school, you will. If you don't, you won't.

Nope. I'm just the typical type-a personality. School interests me with the variety of interesting course work available, but being interesting does not equate to being fun or entertaining. I seem unable to feel entertained in school when I know I have an important exam coming up or an assignment to work on...this is despite the prospect of having a social activity planned out to supposedly alleviate the stress factor. If i could have at least a little fun in pharmacy school, that'll be great. But I'm not there yet, so i'll see. The real fun and entertainment I will enjoy is when I have graduated and could afford to travel to a destination of my choice without anything on my mind...that is my idea of fun. School is basically a drug working as an antagonist on my fun receptors, if you will. When thinking about something pending, my ability to have fun is inhibited.

Our class tailgates at football games, thats the first thing that comes to mind. I agree with medicalcpa, college is fun if you let it be fun.

Two words: LIGHTEN UP. Just reading that stuff acts as an agonist on my :barf: reflex. I'm not completely sure if that's the correct usage of the term agonist, but that's what school is for. As medicalcpa said, it'll be fun if you want to have fun. Simple as that.

We have an optional informational meeting for the incoming first years at my school this weekend. This is all well and good, but what I'm really excited about is the social at Dave and Buster's afterwards! Beer and arcade and table games...a most excellent combination.

YOU NEED TO CHILL OUT. Every time you post you talk about how terrified you are.... pharmacy school may be hard but it is not literally going to kill you- lighten up

p.s. you are not helping the purpose of this thread!

We have a trivia night, and mutltiple parties at various places around town, the ones that come to mind is the Kickoff Classic (at the beg. of the year), the Halloween party and a Mardi Gras party.

those are good ideas...

I can't think of any true traditions that my class has aside from the end-of-the-year party.

However, I aligned myself with a more social segment of my class and I got to take part in plenty of social activities with them. From birthday parties, post-test barrage bar crawls, APhA-related events, pharmaceutical frat-related activities, and all the A-bars afterwards, there are plenty of opportunities if you want to find them.

I forgot - we (kappa psi) also tailgate quite a bit and usually several professors come as well. It's fun to hang out with them outside of class.

We have a Springfest every April (food, bbq, music, outdoor games, pretty much a school fair), and we have scattered events throughout the semester (Friday movie nights, finals food week, bingo night... etc!).

Bingo night!?!?! Wow:laugh: I make fun of it, but I would definitely be there:hardy:

dude. I LOVE bingo.

I would totally be down for bingo night!

We used to have riverboat ride before fall semester would start...

I usually preferred to hang out with my friends rather than with the whole crowd. I do like people, but not in such quantities, not for long, at least. 😀

Yeah! Bingo night is fun. Other fun stuff we have is basketball tournaments (faculty teams, student teams, etc), a dodgeball tournament (which is awesome.. how often do you get to throw a ball at your professor!?), video game tournaments (I think the most recent one was Halo), Tie-Dye Shirt event, Christmas Ornaments event, and there was also a Casino Night where people won gifts and prizes. There's also a lot of food events I enjoy... such as Chocolate Dipping, Wraps and Sandwiches night, Breakfast night... usually during finals week though.

Yeah, we tried to do that for in May but the deal fell through. I was disappointed.

SC always has something going on. Most of the things I've seen have been fundraiser's for XYZ group, but it doesn't really make much difference. It's still something to do. Most of the things I've seen are at clubs, but they've have a Monte Carlo night every year. LKS had a winter retreat (3-day cruise last winter I believe). We also had a tri-frat potluck, tri-frat welcome party. There's always the student mixer's at the national conferences. Most of the campus organizations welcome receptions of some sort (BBQs, bowling nights, movie nights) and an end of year banquet. There are also the HSC events, Professional student meet/greet/mixers.

great ideas!....anyone else!?

ISU does a bunch of things to try and create a community feel. We have both start & end of the year picnics, a Halloween party, a Christmas party, plus we do a bunch of stuff for American Pharmacist's Month including a dessert reception. We also host one of the football games and form a big "Rx" on the field at halftime and hang out with the tailgaters.

The pharmacy frat does a lot of fun things, including making the official float for the homecoming parade and throwing the off-campus events that can't be "officially" hosted by the school because we have a dry campus.

For sports, we have intramural soccer and softball teams, plus there is usually an NCAA bracket in the spring.

If you're involved with APhA, there are even more things to do - we usually try to have out of school events a couple of times a semester for the officers and more involved members. For instance, we did a ropes/challenge course in April then all went out to dinner.

They are still doing the riverboat ride this fall right before school starts, although it sounds like this could be the last time they do it. I overheard some P2's this weekend (the "Welcome to Our World" meeting) talking about how one of the older students was drunk and entered the boat "cockpit" and they had to end the boat ride early. Apparently everyone has to be on especially good behavior this year or its over for the boat ride😳
