I was talking with an old professor of mine about changes to the curriculum my school is considering. One downside of my school was the very limited number of pharmacy electives. We only really had two, and for other professional electives we would take classes at other colleges (gerontology, etc. not pharmacy per se). I wonder how things are at other schools.

For the purposes of this poll, electives would the the classes specific to pharmacy school and only open to pharmacy students at the school, but not mandatory for the completion of the program.

We have several pharmacy electives at UK. Some of the classes are Geriatric Pharmacy, Pediatric Pharmacy, Intro to Post Grad Traning, Antimicrobial Management, Critical Care Pharmacy, etc. Then we have the independent study classes. The school encourages electives outside the COP as well. We just have to get 8 hours one way or another.

Wow. That's impressive. :) How many did an average student take out of those? Three or four? And they are all lectures/labs/seminars, not experiential electives, right? I am not sure that came through clearly in the first post.

If I remember correctly, we had to take about 5 of those (depended on how many credits they were worth). And yep, those were all didactic/lab-type electives that you took during your P2 and P3 years (not the experiential electives we did on rotations P4 year).

hahaha

Looks like a wide range of electives. I wish my school gave such interesting topics. Actually, quite a few of those are required courses in our curriculum.

Really? Which ones?

Well...I guess a lot of those are already built into the curriculum...but these courses delve into the topic much deeper.
The Kinetics and the compounding ones. Since compounding exam's mandatory for licensing in NY.

Edit: Also managed care.

UIC requires 12 hours of electives. It is kind of hard for me to copy them into here.

:laugh: Oh how true it is! I think my 0.1 extra mEq of K definitely killed the pt. Maybe I'll get ready for next semester by getting a huge "FAIL" tattoo on my forehead
