For the essays, is it bad to use passive voice? You are supposed to write it in a narrative-type form, right? So passive voice should be okay?

Having a hard time knowing what kind of style I should use.

My teacher for AP english senior year would fail an essay if it had more than two passive verbs in the entire thing. Thankfully, she's not reading my personal statements for pharmacy school. Though you should obviously minimize the grammar mistakes, I don't think the admissions people will deny you an interview just because you used passive voice.

Use active... passive voice is only for specific things - this isn't one of them. An occasional sentence in passive is sometimes appropriate, but usually not. Switching between active and passive voice breaks the flow of the narrative and normally makes a particular sentence or passage stand out - more often than not in a bad way.

Active voice...passive voice...whatever- just pick one and stick with it.

Just don't write it in the third person- nobody wants to read an essay where every sentence starts with the applicant's name (first or whole).

An essay can be weakened by passive voice, but if it's grammatically sound that probably wouldn't be a problem. Essays should be free of grammatical errors and convey the applicant's interest in pharmacy and his or her particular strengths or potential contributions to the field. However, there shouldn't be much occasion to use passive voice in an essay of that nature...

this isn't an English grad school. it's pharmacy school. get your point across that you want to do pharmacy. all these technicalities are irrelevant. just use your head, and don't make silly mistakes like as above poster said, write in third person.
