What is the future of pharmacy?
I am in the process of making a career change to pharmacy. I am taking my pre-requisites and applying. I am working at a pharmacy right now also. When I was in school, 7 years ago, my major was the hottest thing. By the year I graduated, it was the worst thing. Now that I've switched to pharmacy, I'm beginning to wonder what is the future of pharmacy. Should I go through 3-4 years of schooling and become $200,000 in debt to get into the pharmacy career. I want to know what is the job security in 5-40 years? New pharmacy schools are popping up everywhere. Everyone is trying to get into pharmacy school. Soon,will there be any more shortage? In 20 years or more, will the decrease in baby boomers cause demand to fall? Will cheaper mail order pharmacies prevail?

How many of these threads can we do in a week? If you think anyone can accurately predict this you are an idiot. Also, if you think you are going to do three years of school and be handed $100,000+ to stare at a computer screen and run a drive-thru you should go in a different direction. This is the only part of pharmacy I see going away; unfortunately it encompasses greater than half of the profession in my estimation.

I may be able to answer your question. But which is it...5 or 40 years?
 
Its a tough call to see where things will pan out. I dont see the shortage going away anytime soon. I think the world will always need pharmacists in some way shape or form. Pharmacy is expanding more than shrinking. While clinical pharm is still a relatively new avenue I think it will open up many new doors for pharmacists. I really dont think anyone knows whats going to happen indefinetly. Most of my graduating class from 07 seemed very interested in pursuing residencies and many did. I, however, am very content with staring at my computer screen and making more than 100k. (Sorry, no drive through)

I was curious about that too. If I had to guess, I would think it had something to do with technology -- i.e. computer programming -- thanks to the dot-com bust and the tidal wave of international outsourcing on top of that. :-/

As wisely stated by a couple of my professors: Pharmacy will have to evolve or it will be priced out. Change is on the horizon with Medication Therapy Management, and companies becoming increasingly interested in wellness/clinical programs.The idea is that these will become reimbursemable services, rather than how many scripts filled per day. When pharmacists are seen as a resource in preventative care, disease state management, etc instead of "pill-counters," it will be an exciting day.:luck:

That had to be the dumbest idea for a plotline I may have ever witnessed. Apparently the effecient human body, putting out a whopping 97 degrees C of body temperature is a better source of energy than putting up some g/d solar panels in space, building nuclear reactors, or some countless other ****.

If you pay out of state fees and you are not working, i'm sure it can get close to $200k. My total tuition alone will be a little higher than $75000 if i'm able to change to instate. My living expenses for 4 years will probably be close to that. I am thinking i'll finish with about $150k(i'm in trouble) in debt.

I think we'll be at $140k for on in state, one out of state.....and yes, I did work a ton during school. Usually 30+ hours. Though I spent what I made on video games, plasma TVs, and Dave & Buster's.
