Hello everyone,

I'm going to be starting at LECOM-E this coming fall. I was wondering what is the average starting pharmacy intern pay for the region. At my current job, I get $12/hr but I have heard from people interns get more.

FYI: no prior retail experience.

Thanks,

That sounds about right for a P1. On average, I think it goes up $1/hr every year you're in pharmacy school.

I'd ask someone in your area. I'm in Seattle, and a pharmacy student told me interns here can earn anywhere from $12-24 an hour, with most obviously somewhere in between that. From what I've seen so far, that seems about right. But this will depend on your area and also your year in pharmacy school.

I don't think your lack of pharmacy experience will have too much effect on your pay grade, but it might make it slightly more difficult to get an internship.

Payscale for interns in NYC for CVS is 10, 12, 14, 16, and then 1/2 pharmacist salary.

This is the sad aspect of returning to the east coast - lower intern salary. At Oregon, once we moved on to our P3 year (in an accelerated program), equivalent to Year 6, I started earning $19/hr in Walgreens.I earned $24.47/hr on another intern job in a local commuinity hospital. Some retail pharmacies (eg. Fred Meyers, Kaiser) paid higher, up to $30/hr! In Walgreens, my pay translanted to $1/hr for every year P1-3. Now I have come to Florida for my clinical rotations, I have been offered $15.50 in Walgreens😡 Furthermore, pharmacy in the west coast has developed farther to have well-defined jobs, and better use, for interns👍.

Can you request a higher pay though? I mean, if I call up the district supervisor and tell him that I'm scheduled to go up to $14 but I would like $20, what's the chance that he turns me down?

You're joking, right?

Zero and expect the *pharmacy supervisor* to remember you.

if pay is set by corporate why would they make adjustments for an individual? If I were the supervisor I'd tell you to go find your own job that pays differently, that's what we pay.

I say it depends on the situation and the corporate company. I've heard of Techs who relocate and keep their same pay. Not sure how true this may be.

That's different, though. Why WOULDN'T they keep their same pay, especially if they're working for the same company?

Moving somewhere with a lower cost of living?

I'm not sure it's legal to just reduce someone's pay because you want to. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall hearing that.

pay scale at Giant Eagle in Columbus is $12, $14, $16, and then in P4 you make $18. As a technician you start off at $8.10. You get the raise once you start the school year. Also Giant Eagle kind of sucks because intern hours now count in the same budget as technician hours now so they are no longer flexible about giving you a ton of hours over summer and not a lot during school.

Does anyone know of a pharmacy chain that still does not count intern hours as part of the technician budget? The former Giant Eagle interns could work as much as they wanted over the summer but now with the budget changes they are counted as technician hours and are very limited.

Giant Eagle also offers $2000 per year for educational assistance if you can get an A or B in all your classes. However, if you get just one C then aid gets cut in half, so $1000 a year if you are a C student.
