I work in CVS pharmacy in SOuth FLorida.. I have been barely getting any hrs. I feel frustrated because I do not work during school so all the money I have to make is to make in summer.. I do not get loans my parents pay for my tuition.. Is any one is same situation who is getting less hours then expected?

Same here. I'm getting 10 RVC hours and whatever the store can spare...which is usually nothing.

CVS seems like they're cracking down around the board. Barring any tech callouts, I can only get 4 hours a week billed to corporate.

When I interviewed HR told me that a lot of students come in expecting 40hrs/week but but in reality most people don't get more than 10-20 hrs. Sucks, but that's the norm around the country (at least for CVS according to the interviewer). Maybe you should consider putting in a small amount of time during school? She told me if I could only work 4-5 hrs while school was in session it was fine. Surely you could find a few hrs during the week to set aside for work.

I can verify that CVS is doing this to Interns in our area as well. However, other chains are not, and I know another guy who said he was getting a full 40 hours in at Wal-Mart.

If your livelihood depends on it look elsewhere!

I can do up to 40 hours/week at Walgreens.

I'm having trouble finding hours also. My supervisor is always like "when I ask you if you can work to cover someone you always say no, or when something comes up you say no, but now that you have extra time and we have extra people you want more hours?"

Many pharmacy students say no, because they have to study or attend rotations and classes and sometimes life happens.

Try saying yes more and your supervisor will do his or her best to give you more hours. (easier said than done, but worth the effort).

Hows rotations? Aren't you sad you can't wear Nike shox no more?! haha

I have this month off actually. Next month I'm at this place that deals with domestic violence. Yay,:scared:

I've been told its a pretty laid back place though.

what's the average amount of hours a week as an intern

i work in the boston area as an intern and get between 30 to 40 hours, but it requires me working at 3 to 4 different stores a week to get enough hours

Wow, Im assuming your supervisor is referring to the school year when bringing up situations when you cannot work. That is a bit rude on their part, IMO. They are pretty much telling you the only way they will give you hours is if you start putting work before school, that is messed up.

Right now I can get around 30-40 hrs bouncing around 3 stores in the area. During the fall I plan on just sticking to my original store and working about 10 hrs.

Are you against hospital pharmacy? If not, try seeing if you can get a job per diem in a hospital. Hospitals are usually less popular, therefore, you might find more hours there. Also, staying away from cities with pharmacy schools or larger cities might help.

I had that issue in the beginning of the summer, but what I did was take part time at multiple places, and now I have more hours than I want! The only downside is last minute scheduling and subsequently frequent schedule conflicts, but every time I get my pay checks I forget about those downsides! I'm working about 16-24 hours at a busy NYC independent, about 16 hours at a Children's Hospital and doing research and per diem work for a upcoming compounding independent. Diversifying and not sticking with the conventional Walgreens/CVS will only help unless you are looking for an early sign on deal (good luck with that one in this economy, I don't know about FL but in NY that is a lost cause!)

Good luck and enjoy your summer and time off while you have it!

Werid that corporate is cutting down on RVC hours. This is usually not a good sign as it means your market has enough pharmacists and that less RVC hours = want the district to hire less interns.

In NYC, our interns are getting a lot of hours...

Cut down my hours to FOUR at Target 🙁 I couldn't stand it, especially during the summer. Four hours?? So I was lucky enough to find a second job at a Rite Aid. I'm getting about 20-25 hours at Rite Aid. However, I make $11 at Target and they started me off at $8 at Rite Aid. $8! Better than no job at all, right??

If you work for a chain your best option is to contact the head tech of the district if they have one...or the supervisor for the district...and tell them you're available to pick up any and all shifts...last minute...whatev.

Then make good on your word. You will get all the hours u want and alot u probabaly don't want...the pharmacy manager would rather have an intern that can do additional things to free them up that a tech can't do.

The diversification option is good too...good to get out of one chain...of course...it's easier to say u can't work at store x cuz you picked up a shift at store y than it is to say u have a shift at the hospital, independent, etc.

But you can't really expect a chain to remember that time u picked up all those shifts...loyalty means jack at chains...unless u have a good sup and they are there a while.

I work for Walmart and they are giving me around 14 hours. I can easily do 40 at any Walgreens if I ever decide to get off my lazy butt. They cut back out intern hours only a year ago. I remember the intern before me bieng treated like a king. He used to get 40 hours, monetary incentives, used to get laid a lot etc. My entire district of 11 stores only hired 2 interns this year ( myself included) and there were some pharmacy students who didnt even get an intern position.

i wish my parents would've paid for my tuition. but luckily, my uncle sam lent me a lot of money which i'll be paying back to him for the next 15 yrs

Ehh, a few people have told me my priorities are messed up(School > Play > Work). Usually they ask me to work the full Sunday or some nights here and there, which I CAN technically work but prefer not to.

I'm getting 40 hours a week at my store (well.. 37.5 hrs because of the mandatory 1/2 hour taken off for our "break".. even though I work through it or take a 5 min instead of a 1/2 hour.. er.. bummer). I get this many hours only because I work hard and I take any shifts possible. Now that I have established myself as a hard worker with the trainer, I get better shifts (or dibs at least) which is great! 😳) However, once school starts, I move to another region so... it's only temporary for the summer. My pharmacy chain in my school's area hasn't responded to me for many weeks.. don't think I would get work during the school year. 🙁

So the hours are there.. it might not be the store you want, the distance you want, or the time shift you want, but if you want it badly it's there.

Don't give up! :luck:
