Hello Everyone

Just had a question about becoming a pharmacy intern. Is it almost automatic once you start classes in pharmacy school to have the pharmacy intern license or do you have to wait until the next summer. The question I have is that I will obviously need to work to cover living and family expenses and depending on how quick I can apply to become a pharmacy intern? Also, how does hiring work for pharmacy interns nowdays?

Once you begin the program, you then apply for your pharmacy intern license. Depending on the state, that can take a couple of weeks to a few months to actually receive it. Everyone got their intern license at some point during the first semester at my COP.

Most people are happy to hire interns since you can do more than a tech. Just be willing to learn, take notes, and don't be above doing standard technician work or working the drive-through window. I'd strongly recommend applying to every hospital near you and trying to get hospital experience.

The program you attend should be sending out basic information regarding submission to your state board of pharmacy. Some states are different, but for the majority once you submit to a background / drug test and pay the associated fees, you then obtain your Intern License that will either be active on the 1st day of class and mailed to the program such as is done in my state, or it'll be mailed out to you within 1-2 months of applying. Most states allow you to apply up to 3 months before your curriculum starts.

Keep in mind though (and talk with your programs student affairs or speak with a representative from your state board of pharmacy), some states will take you on as an intern while other states will merely hire you on as a "tech" until after 1 year of matriculation in your program. For example, some states in the Midwest give you intern status the moment your hired with the associated pay (usually $3-$5 more an hour than a certified tech your first year) that can count toward "hours" of experience along with your future IPPE and APPE rotations. Other states such as the one my program is located (Oregon) will not recognize you as an intern until after the 1st year of pharmacy. Either way, the hiring agency must have a copy of your Intern License to keep on site as long as you work their.

It depends on the state. For example, in Arizona, you will obtain your intern license during the first semester of pharmacy school. Other states like Massachusetts, you can be an intern after one year of pharmacy school.
