I've never posted on here before so i'm not sure if this is the right place to start this thread...

I'm currently a freshman in college. As of right now i'm majoring in education and am also completing some prequisites for pharmacy school. I am getting married to my bf who is a marine so we will be moving to a military base by the time I start my sophomore year. From what I know there are 2 community colleges near the base but they do not offer many degree programs so most people take courses online. Am I in trouble when it comes to my pharmacy prereqs? I guess basically what i'm trying to find out is if pharmacy schools will accept courses that are taken online? or if anyone has any suggestions on what I can do. I'm just new to all of this so just trying to think ahead!

Unless stated otherwise online courses would work. The only course I know that says you can't do online for some schools is public speaking. On the other hand, you have to have labs for your bios and chems (or most of them) which I don't ever think could be done online. That is another thing to consider as well. The pre-reqs for many pharmacy schools can be completed solely from community college and others only require another semester/year at a university.

The best bet would be this:

Take the courses that you can online whenever you can. English, history, economics, etc. that fill general requirements for pharmacy schools. Whenever possible take your sciences at a community setting like bio 1 and 2, and chem 1 and 2 and orgo 1 and 2. Those are the ones most likely needing labs. Also, while math is possible to do online, calculus isn't always a good thing to do online since it's a different way of thinking for many people; only do it if you are a strong math person.

Also, I see your concern where a school might look down on online courses being "easy" but I've gotten some lower grades there because there are more directed by your own time management which indicates maturity. And at the very worst, a good PCAT shows you didn't skimp out and take easy courses online and not learn anything.

The only other issue I see is that if you are going to be doing most of your courses online or piecewise then LOR from a science faculty might be a little tough so try to plan out taking the same teacher as much as possible to get a good LOR and so they will remember you.

Thanks guys! I'm sure i'll make it work somehow just wanted to know for sure it wasnt impossible. It makes sense to take my science courses in person so i'll make sure to do that. I'll try to contact as many schools as I can but I plan on applying everywhere I can so we'll see how that goes lol

You're not headed out to Camp Lejeune are you?

Contact the schools in which you intent to apply and ask them about their policy on online classes.

I agree with both pieces of information in this thread. However, contacting the schools you would potentially like to go to is the best policy.

I have heard a nasty rumor (from several sources, but haven't been able to get the school to confirm/deny) that MWU CPG doesn't take online classes. And, since they're local, they know that Rio Salado (a community college) is all online classes, so they flat out deny any credits from there. The only reason I give this rumor much credence is because I've heard it from several sources, including some current MWU CPG students.

Of course, it could just be a scare tactic or taken out of context. So, take it with a grain of salt.

No I'm moving to 29 palms which kinda worries me cause I heard there isn't many options there when it comes to schools

Oh I am even more sorry for you now. I only spent a few months there for training, but it was terrible. We weren't allowed off base there, so I can't help with the schools. At least you will only be about two hours from Vegas.

How about Copper Mountain College?

I know they're near 29 Palms base but I don't know about the quality of the instruction or what classes are offered. Worth checking out for you, though.

Midwestern Glendale does take online courses, but those courses probably put you at a disadvantage if they are science courses. If they are gen eds, it really doesn't matter. I received an interview invite and I took A&P online through Rio Salado.

yeah now much out at 29 palms from what i've been hearing. so far i've taken all my classes in person and just 1 english class through rio salado so hopefully thats alright.

I've heard about copper mountain college too. i'm going to check it out when I get there. I think they have all the classes I need to take except OChem

Well it is in the middle of nowhere. I remember being in the Mojave Desert @ Fort Irwin for JRTC before my first deployment and good god that is a wasteland. I recently drove near it on my way to Las Vegas and was like, yuck. And people actually, voluntarily, live in these areas, like Barstow. LOL...

What's wrong with Camp Lejeune?

I finished my Associates in Science Degree @ Coastal Carolina Community College outside of the base and was accepted into UNC-CH.

But I am guessing you are talking about the atmosphere, not the opportunity. 😀
