In general, are pharmacy admissions lenient on certain prerequisites? For example, many PharmCAS schools require microeconomics and a 4 credit hour calculus. Will they accept macroeconomics instead? -- or 3 credits of calculus with analytical geometry (with 9 credits of college algebra, statistics, and trig)? I'm concerned about how picky these admission boards can be with increased competition.

I plan on applying with a bachelors in microbiology next fall but all of these extra prerequisites won't count towards my major and end up extending my graduation date yet another year.

I think your best bet is to email the schools that you want to apply to and ask them about that, because different school accepts different things.

I'm not sure because most schools are very picky as to what classes their students are to take. Micro-Econ and Macro-Econ are two totally different classes. As for Calc, I've never heard it offered as a 3 credit hour class. I would recommend that you only transfer over what's necessary and forget about algebra, stats and trig...most schools wont even look at that stuff as it is expected that most students will have already taken those classes prior to calculus.

Why don't you take Calc II? That will give you six hours of calculus, if they are only worth 3 at your school. Don't you need 2 semesters of calculus to get a science degree, anyway?

As for economics, wait until you see if you get provisional acceptance to a school and then see if they require micro economics specifically. Then you can take it the summer before school starts at a community college. Not all schools require economics.

Well here, the waterdown calculus for Business and Social sciences is only 3 hours and you can't take calc II without taking the normal 4 hr calc I. That is the only calc biology majors are required to take here , besides stat and finite math.

For microbiology we only need 3 credits of Calculus with Analytical Geometry. I will certainly ask my top choice schools (all the Florida schools) about the specifics on their prerequisites.

All of these low level prerequisites can get frustrating... It's going to suck if I get rejected by admissions while I'm finishing up pathogenic micro, hematology and neurobiology -- rejected because of a little thing like me taking sociology 4 years ago instead of psychology.

I know how you feel. The summer before matriculating to pharmacy school I had to finish THREE pre-requisite courses for the school I was going to during a 6 week summer session, and I had to take them all in the same summer session. All because the pre-reqs I took weren't transferring over properly because I wasn't diligent enough to make sure they would. Be proactive and be sure! Don't be like me.
