I was just wondering which pharm schools have the best campuses (life/environment)? Even though it's a minute matter, and I probably won't be able to pick and choose where I go, I would still like to know...
like I haven't even heard of some of the pharm schools..so i don't know if it just has pharm students and such...plus I'm attending a comm college, so I would like to attend like real college for once...

Of the ones I saw/visited when interviewing, UCSF has a great city but no real collegiate feel. University of Michigan is a diverse, quaint, and affluent town in the midwest as are University of Wisconsin and UNC Chapel Hill. Each college town has similar qualities differing mostly in regional flavors (the accents are really cool).

I can give my thoughts on 3 of the California schools. Bear in mind these are just impressions and everyone sees things differently. This is what I remember.

UCSF - "Campus" consists of a few rooms inside a medical center, and then from what I understand, you take some courses at some other health sciences campus at another site in your later years. Everything's very tightly packed at the hospital...not a lot of square footage, just a few soaring buildings. It's pretty much hardcore, downtown SF and it takes awhile to get out to any other community. The students seemed really busy with their schoolwork and different community projects and clubs that they were involved in. Didn't sound like they had a lot of time to have fun.

USC - Like UCSF, it's part of a medical center, but they have their own dedicated building and the medical campus is absolutely sprawling huge so you're kinda separate from everything else. It's not a great area, but the nice thing is that good, clean communities to live in are just 10-15 minutes up the freeway. The students here seemed like they were spending good amounts of time enjoying themselves and that they were still getting involved in the community and learning a lot. Really liked the vibe they gave off.

UOP - Stockton...sucks. It's just really run-down and depressing. There won't be much to do there. However, I'm sure you can find a decent place to live and you shouldn't fear getting shot or robbed or anything. Pharmacy campus is on the other side of a bridge from the main campus, not really much to it, but that's the case with all of the schools. The students seemed to like the school enough but concurred that there isn't a whole lot to do up there.

You really have to visit the schools to get a true feel for things. 🙂

yea i guess i have to visit the places myself to get a true feel...
VCU, UMD, UIC, UB -anyone know or have experienced how these schools are?

Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS now- just changed the name): is located in Albany, NY. It is right across from Albany Medical College (AMC), and built next to Albany Law School on University Heights. The campus consist of South Hall, 1st year dormitories (consisting of a room and a bathroom which you get to share with one other or 3 if you have a quad), Notre Dame (2nd year dormitories- renovated but still run down), Princeton+Holland Suites (3rd and up dormitories-- nicer and part of old public transportation building), ACP Student Center (consisting of 2 lecture halls and a cafeteria which serves bad food-- you'll be sick of it after a few days), O'Brien building (mainly where adminstration and offices are), Classroom building (where individual humanities course are held), and the Biomedical Research Building (far less impressive than it sounds) across a long parking lot.

The buildings above emcompass the whole of ACP campus. It's alot smaller than you think but especially if you haven't viewed other colleges. You will be among approximately 250 Pharm.Ds per class (0-6 program) --- up from an original 150 or so in the past 4 years. This is not counting the BS enrollment which they are aggressively increasing. ***Attrition rate from years 0-6 is about 40% or 30% when your in the professional years (although I think this number is higher). ACP was recently placed on probabtion due to a major increase in attrition by the pharmacy board (in other words it was about to lose accredition.) this past year. They don't have alot of room and have tried to alleviate this by doing online classes because of seating.

As for study space... you either find one early or your not going to find one at all. There simply hasn't been an increase in study space despite the fact that they have tripled enrollment within the last decade. ACP hopes to add more students which I don't know how they are going to do it.

Now for the campus life... there simply isn't one. There were like 5 frats/soro but all but 2 now exist due to hazing issues. This just happened this past year. When you get to 1st year professional... you will be studying all the time if you want to stay in the school... I think it will be a 3.0 u need to maintain to stay in for any people who want to come to this school. This is up from a 2.0/2.5.

As a student here, I can say that the majority if not all hate this school and wish we have choosen a different school. You will learn alot as a student here and be given oppurtunities... not all of them bad. If you want a Pharm.D and don't care what school. This is the school for you... but if you want a school that you can respect and an enviroment that will foster an air of community... then choose another school.

Any questions can be PM'd to me.

I'll go by the places where I've been to or interviewed at.

Long Island University - The campus is pretty small in my opinion. Library is pretty big, however the technology at this school is lacking and is too high security (can't use P2P or Torrent programs) on campus.

There are barely any power outlets in the classroom and forget about driving here because there is no parking lot, and too much traffic.

Touro - It looks like a really small building from the outside, but its great inside. It is extremely technologically advanced. There are no undergraduate courses in this building, just the Osteopathic Medical School and the Pharmacy School. The Pharmacy floors are currently under construction and should be completed during Spring 2009.

Also, forget about driving here.

Jefferson - This campus is frikkin huge, I haven't seen the classrooms at all though. I saw a helicopter landing on the hospital while on tour.
