I've been accepted to USC and U of Houston. I know USC is a great school, but I live in Houston now and like it very much. The tuition and living expenses are twice as much at USC. I know I will get a good education at both with both of them in the center of huge medical centers. I really just want to know if my future career with will be drastically better if I go to USC. Any advice would be great! 😕

I live in Texas and work with many hospitals in the state of Texas. And I went to USC. Go to USC. You'll pay more money in tuition by going to USC but I've worked with both USC and UH pharmacists.. Go to USC.

Different story if you get into UT... then go to UT. Don't get me wrong..UH is a decent school. And it's not like going to USC will earn you more money.. but you won't have trouble working in Houston or anywhere in Texas as a USC grad. In fact, your resume will stick out among Texas pharmacy school grads. Trust me.

Thanks so much. Ive been looking for someone that knew about both schools and worlds.

Also you said the salary wouldn't really make a difference. What about the type of job I would be looking for. You think I would have a harder time going out of Texas if I stayed there for school?
Thanks

What about the type of job you would be looking for? I have no idea of knowing what you want to do. I've hired many pharmacists before and where applicants went to school really didn't make or break the applicant. Then again, the shortage of pharmacist didn't allow me to be too picky.

There are so many variables to hiring that it won't make a whole lot of difference either you go to UH or USC. I just feel like everything being equal, USC will give you a better PharmD experience than UH. Again, I'm not knocking UH and I work with many UH grads who are fantastic pharmacists. It's just that I'm a USC alum and I also work with a lot of SC guys and I was hired by a USC alum. And everything being "equal," I will hire a USC alum over other programs. But I doubt you'll be coming to me for a job in the future. So go take a tour of USC and UH...talk to people and make your decision based on your thoughts.

But remeber USC has a better football program. I like Kevin Sumlin and I think he'll do great for UH football... but he'll eventually move on to a bigger and better program.

Translation: He's a biased USC grad and there is no real difference between the schools. He sees the world through whatever shade red and gold/yellow colored glasses. Just go to f'n Houston. Good gawd....

Nope. I judge programs by their 4th year rotations. UH's 4th year program isn't quite at the level of USC's. And maybe this results from no other reason than having started the PharmD program in the 50's vs. the 90's. And once you've been out long enough and have seen the differences, then you'll know. If this student is interested in doing a residency in CA in the future, he/she will have a better chance coming from USC vs UH. And as a USC grad, there will be that "oh SC..." factor when resume is reviewed. When we're reviewing resume's, we are interested in where the person went to school. Again, there are recognized name schools and USC isn't the only one on the list.

There are quality pharmacists from every school in the US. But you're just not going to get that USC football experience at UH.:meanie:

Oh, bull****. You're just being biased as hell and you know it. And I'll put up the degree of difficulty my acute care rotations offered over USC or any other damn school. I can't imagine how it's possible to get schooled and humbled any more than I did with one Charles Ponte at WVU. My ego still hasn't recovered. WVU isn't one of the "top 10" schools on that idiotic list US News publishes....and I'd bet dimes to dollars there is a dude like that at Houston, too. C'mon...you know you are being blinded by the three magical letters of your alma mater...

Here lies the fallacy of your opinion. You've only seen what you went through. I've precepted different programs and evaluated different hospital preceptorships for different schools. At least my observation and my opinion come from having seen it. Your opinion comes from your truly blinded obsession of WVU. Oh.. I don't know Charles Ponte and I couldn't careless how hard his rotation was. If he's in academics..he's a putz.

Still don't buy it...I thought you've been globetrotting the last few years...? And I've actually worked with a number of people...none from USC...and probably not as many as you...but a few from Kentucky, Ohio State, Pitt, North Carolina...other "top" programs. The only thing I've noticed is that its much more dependent on the person than the school. And if you stop bull****ting and be honest, you know this is the closest thing to the truth, too. Except for the people from the newer schools...they frighten me. But that's mostly because they tend to get the bottom of the barrel anyway.

NO ONE is devoid of all bias, or preference. Everyone has a point of view from which they operate - as someone is so fond of saying - "where you stand depends on where you sit..."

This does not negate the views of people learned and experienced enough to have formed educated opinions they have garnered. I've never considered OSU, Pitt, or UNC as "top" programs nor do I give any credit to school rankings. You are right, it depends on the person. Then again, that view only supports what I'm trying to say. That person will gain more by going to USC than UH even though going to UH won't hurt him.

agreed. the differences in admissions standards between "top" and "good" schools are minimal, which means the quality of student going in is relatively the same. people are going to gain whatever amount of knowledge they want by the time they come out. It's not like everyone who showed up to a class by a particular prof came out of it smarter than anyone else. the people who put the work in to stay at the top of their game are the ones who are going to be remembered as "great" pharmacists to work with.
