Pharmacy School vs. Salary

There is no difference in pay depending on what school you went to! My friend went to pharmacy school in friggin' Iran, came here, passed his NAPLEX, and is making just as much money as any UCSF graduate. I really don't think Walgreens or Rite Aid give a crap which school you went to, especially with the demand for pharmacists right now.

That's different. Iranian pharmacists fall under FPHS Incentive program. That's Foreign Pharmacists of Hostile States Incentive program where if they've been at a disadvantage due to the action of the US Gov/Military action against their home country, they're exempt from the salary discrepencies. This program includes pharmacists from Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Venezuela, and more.. But it doesn't apply to your typical European countries and allies of the US.

What about Cuba? Does the dry soil rule apply too?

What if you were born in Iran and moved to the States when you were like 12. Then went to Pharmacy School at Northstate? Would you still earn less?

Depends on who you are. In this case, pay is rank ordered just like it is everywhere else in the world:

1) Hot Girl
2) Man
3) Ugly Girl

With the hot girl obviously getting paid the most. And degrees of such affect pay, too. (I.E. , Anne Hathaway would get $85/hour, random attractive girl, like $60/hour, a dude, like $47/hour, Rosie O'Donnell would get $17/hour.)

Oh silly Mikey. Of course he's kidding.

1st generation Iranian pharmacist who's been educated in the US has other criteria that must be reviewed before proper compensation can be determined. The FPHS Initiative has a provisional addendum that deals with this exact issue. In this case, the salary is determined by the political affiliation of the said pharmacist's parents when they were in their home country. Yeah...I know...they can simply lie on the affidavit.

It may not affect your salary but it *can* (but not necessarily) impact career options and experience during Pharmacy School.

I don't think Iran is part of the FPHS or whatever it's called. I researched online and found nothing about Iran. I also don't think it matters what school one attends. I have many friends who are pharmacists and have attended schools all over the state, out of state, and internationally. They all get paid really well...maybe $2-3 diff. depending on whether they are pharmacy manager or staff pharmacist.

If you were born in Iran and then moved to states when you were 12, then by law you are a terrorist. Just kidding people! I moved when I was seven.

Well, you suck at googling then.. :meanie:

I moved when I was seven.

This is under FPHS Addendum Section II, Minor age group consideration clause. I haven't read it yet.

well you also have to take into account how attractive you are as well which boosts your salary by at least 10 bucks 😛

Isn't her avatar a picture of herself?

Here is a question: Who would you rather take for hospital position? Someone who is straight out of UCSF or someone who went to one of the newer schools but has worked as a pharmacist in retail for 5 years with good recommendations?

I think I might go the route of doing retail for awhile to pay off loans if I can't get a full time position in a hospital somewhere. Seems like residency is pretty competitive, but I could keep trying while working.

New grad, no question. You lose what you don't use rotting away in retail. Conversely, I wouldn't put a dude with 5 years of hospital staffing experience in a retail setting, either (though I think the transition would be easier than retail --> hospital)

So do people ever irrationally and subtly show fear of you like you're going to show up to class one day on a suicide mission? If I go to NYC and they hear my Appalachian accent, they automatically think I'm a cracker-bumpkin of a racist with an IQ of 60. Just because I'm a (mostly) white boy with an accent. I couldn't imagine having the same physical characteristics of the whackos that decided to fly a plane into a skyscraper. Must be a pain in the ass.

People are not scared of me, or at least I don't think. As you can tell i'm female. I don't have a beard hanging to my knees like the idiots from 9/11 so people don't group me with their characteristics. Most people think i'm latina when they first meet me which is just fine with me. We are all the same...beautiful people. I just said the terrorist thing as a joke...sometimes we need to make fun ourselves and have a little laugh. 🙂

So wait, I'm confused.

What if you went to a great school, like USC, WVU, or even UCSF, AND you're a terrorist on the side too. What would your pay be then? How about if you came from Northstate instead of a great school? AND, your boss didn't know about the whole terrorist gig?

If you went to a pharmacy school in Nigeria; where you learn about blood leaching and your classes are in grass huts, you make $11 less an hour.
FYI, don't go pulling stuff out your ass when commenting about education in other countries. I know that absolutely NO classes are taken in grass huts in Nigeria, neither does pharmacy education there equal "blood leaching." Small detail, I know, but enough things are already wrong with the country without misconceptions thrown in.

...I'm from there.

Exactly. Nigerians can academically bitchslap most of these Pharmers.

"We are all the same...beautiful people." Agreed, including bearded folks.

Students at institutions of higher learing don't typically hold these types of fears. They (usually) tend to use this organ known as a brain.

It is a pain in the ass. I get treated like **** going through customs.

BTW, I appreciate what you are saying, but I would just like to point out that someone may've taken exception with what you said if it were "I couldn't imagine having the same physical characteristics of the urban thugs causing riots, and killings. Must be a pain in the ass." It's like saying you couldn't possibly imagine being black. The very thought is worrisome. I know you didn't mean anything by it, but I thought I would mention this.

"I couldn't imagine...." is a colloquialism in these parts that means "I'm glad I don't have to go through that bull**** like y'all's do." Most people don't speak or care to understand hilljack. Obviously, I could imagine being someone else. If I couldn't, then it would be impossible to have an opinion stated before as such.

WAIT!
How do you get $22 more if you go to a CA school?
Don't you guys know that CA is handing out IOU's to everyone getting a state return?

I've got dual citizenship with Australia, therefore I'm going to be paid double to sit on plane and work for one company in both countries 👍

Pharmacy students that play horde characters while attending school make exactly $13.37 more an hour than those that play alliance characters.

For the Horde!

Thank goodness I just switched over from my ally character!

Oh, and I was under the impression that congress was talking about making changes to FPHS to reduce some of its incentives; it's well known that many pharmacists from the countries the program covers have additional forms of income. However, I also heard that they were finally going to be adding Lichtenstein to the program - pharmacists from that country have been getting salaries far below what they deserve for years!

Lichtenstein....ah the memories....Yes I agree, Lichtensteinites are receiving far less than they should. A good cause for FPHS to pick up. It is an injustice that must be righted!

LOL you guys are so mean >_>

But WVU is so wrong on the salary level, it's most likely always

1. Men (just cause we are expected to provide/breadwinner...)
2. Hot Chicks (brings more customer in!)
3. Ugly Chicks

Cute Baby!! 😍

Oh, FPHS has recently turned down the petition to add Lichtenstein to the list for obvious reasons. Lichtenstein was never a hostile country to the US. Also, FPHS currently doesn't extend benefits to European countries at the moment. But the board will be voting on extending benefits to pharmacists from the area where the Bosnian war took place (croatia, Serbia, and the former Yugoslavia). The 2nd generation US pharmacists born to the parents from this region will receive benefits similar to the Iranian-American pharmacists if the addendum passes.

But I'm starting to think this sort of affirmative action to benefit foreign pharmacists is unconstitutional. There is a group of pharmacists from Mississippi trying to repeal FPHS right now. If they win, FPHS will not appeal but rather close shop. That's the inside scoop.

I noticed many grads from higher ranked schools in prestigious residency programs. Also, many nationally competitive rotation programs seem to have several grads from higher ranked schools. Third, industry often has stronger links with higher ranked schools.

sorry for being unhumorous.

Quality of school doesn't affect your pay in retail, as there is a shortage and your GPA don't matter. But in better schools will likely give you better opportunities in hospitals, which has been more choosy.

Better schools probably offer better networking, rotation sites, residency, which translate into more immediate opportunities or future growth potentials. For example, rotation at FDA is a competitive application process. I probably wouldn't have bothered to apply if I'm in a no-name school.

in terms of better school, what is it between Rutgers and Northeastern?

Try the US New and World report. I don't know much about those 2 schools. But I have heard that Rutgers have a good post-graduate fellows program for industry tracked pharmacists.

I've been accepted to USC and U of Houston. I know USC is a great school, but I live in Houston now and like it very much. The tuition and living expenses are twice as much at USC. I know I will get a good education at both with both of them in the center of huge medical centers. I really just want to know if my future career with will be drastically better if I go to USC. Any advice would be great! 😕

I'd just go to Houston...

Thanks. But just for the convienence? or do you think I will still have many of the same opportunities??

Unless you want to do a residency or work in California, you'll be fine. If you want to be in Texas, the networking potential a degree from Houston would offer would be significant. Any of the "old" schools are fine. Many academics look down upon the newer schools. I know this for a fact.

The University of Houston is in the Texas Medical Center! If that does not provide you with incredible clinical opportunities, nothing else will.
