What does your typical schedule look like? I seem to be getting conflicting opinions on how school and studying eats up all of your time and it won't be like it was during undergrad. On average, how many hours do you study per day? I want to have enough time to hit the gym, join intramural sports, and join one or two pharmacy student activity groups and still make sure I have enough time to study to keep my grades up.
 
Your going to get answers all over the board on this one. It depends a lot on what school you go to, what year you are, how fast you learn material, what your study habits are, etc, etc.

I'm a p1 and I generally study around 5-10 hours over the week.

Class schedule:
10-4 M and W
10-12 T
9-3 R
10-3 F

"Special" classes and small group work are scheduled 8-10 or after class on whatever day.

We have required community service which I complete by being your moderator on SDN. 🙂

I work out an hour a day, on average.

I'm not in any student organizations right now.

Studying probably averages out to an hour or two a day...some days are much much higher and some days I don't study at all.

My grades were good in the fall; they are just OK this semester.

I'm married with a child.
 
The biggest thing that eats up most of your time are the labs that go along with your pharmaceutics and pharmacology courses. Another thing that becomes limiting is the fact that a lot of projects require that you work within a group, thus you are limited by the various schedules of your group members. As for working out, you'll have to make time either early in the morning or late in the evening.

Honestly, we're in the hardest year I think.. or the hardest transition year I suppose. When it's not tests (7), it's assignments, labs, papers, random DI information resource BS, etc.

You always have something that will eat away your time and be a pain in the ass. It's a constant pain in the ass. That's the best way to describe it.

I spend some time in lecture, about 25 hr a week and then about 10 hr a week drinking with friends, if I have time I study every now and then.

Depends on if I have I test. Usually, 5-10 hrs a week right before the test. I skip half of my classes and sleep. Enjoy the process. It can be as bad or as good as you make it.

BTW, I am carrying a 3.8 or so GPA. Could do better if I went to class or studied more, but why?

Grades do not matter as long as you pass and get your license.

Everyone has to budget their time based on their own priorities. I have am really good at time management and that is as important as intelligence when you have so much to learn in so few hours.
 
I'm a first year student at the University of the Pacific. My schedule this semester looks like

M 11-12 (lab 12-2)
T 9-1 (lab 2-4)
W 9-1 (lab 4-6)
TH 9-12 (lab 3-5)
F 9-12

I would say that the schedule is very do-able. I mean it's a busy schedule, but what pharmacy school isn't going going to be busy? I am also involved in a variety of activities around campus, and I also like to participate in intermural sports. I think one thing that is important is time management. I can't really stress that enough.

Well...just for purposes of continuity, I'll start with Thursday. Keep in mind I'm not actually in the "class" part of school anymore. I'm in rotations...thank God..

Thursday: Don't go to lecture. Sleep.
Friday: Drive up to Pittsburgh. Hang out in Oakland and/or Strip District. Spend $200 at Dave & Buster's.
Saturday: Do nothing. Watch/go to WVU football game if option exists.
Sunday: Do nothing. Watch/go to Steelers game if option exists.
Monday: Get notes from classmates for test on Wednesday, start studying.
Tuesday: Study for exam.
Wednesday: Study for exam. Take exam.

Though occasionally there were "mandatory attendance" dinguses that made me come to class. I hated going to class. It's not like there is anything in pharmacy school that is so hard to grasp that you literally need it physically taught to you by a guy standing 10 feet in front of you that a piece of paper 2 feet in front of you can't cover. I just wish people wouldn't frown upon people not going to lecture. Some people just don't get anything out of it (me).
 
I wonder if there are any Mercer students on this forum now?

Mercer has this cool system where you only take one class at a time. That is,
you take one class of the semester, take nothing but that for 3 weeks, take the final, take the next class of the semester, and so on.

I'm kinda wondering why nobody mentioned that. Guess no mercer students use the board.

Honestly though, I think I'd operate far better if I could concentrate on one thing at a time, rather than learning physics, chemistry and biology at the same time, and remembering one third of each.

Some people are auditory learners like me) and forget to think that not everybody is the same. Likewise most teachers also believe that students learn mor eby attending lectures cos they might say something that might come out in the exam and u missed out (so that u wont say they didnt inform u so u want that extra point)

Sorry - too busy studying the last couple of days to respond🙂 I'm a Mercer P1 - still getting used to the block system. It's not quite as pure a block as you describe above. This semester we are doing the following: We have 3 classes that only meet one day per week for entire semester - Intro to Health Care II (1-3 TH), Practice of Pharmacy (1-3 TU), and Anatomy/Physiology (8:30-12 on W). Then, we have one more class at a time blocked over this. First block was Pharmacy Management, 2nd block is Pharmaceutics, and 3rd block will be Microbiology/Immunology - class varies times on M, Tu, Th, and F mornings. Also, there is a designated time (which for P1's is 8-10 am on Monday😱 ) when professors can give tests if they don't want to give them during the regular class time. There are no classes scheduled from 12-1 any day so organizations can meet.

There are good and bad things about this. I like not having 6 or 7 classes going all at the same time. However, for your blocked class it does mean that your tests come close together and you have to keep up with the material because you will mostly have another lecture in the same class the next day. For example, the M/I block will start on April 3 and end on May 7 this year. In that span of time, we will have 5 short quizzes and 4 exams just for that class.

In the P2 and P3 years, you get one elective a semester and they will meet for 2 hours just one day a week through the semester. Also, the blocks for the different classes don't always match up datewise, so there's pretty much always somebody around studying for a test! Sometimes that works out well though - last semester biochem was the middle block, so my real finals week in December was super easy because I only had statistics and the finals in the two afternoon classes.

Yeah - it wasn't exactly optimal. We did basically the entire Biochemistry textbook in two months. It's pretty widely acknowledged as the hardest p1 class. You learn a LOT, but I have rarely been so glad to have a class finish. The two weeks after that block ended were like vacation even though I was still going to school!!

Which is another reason I hate school. The pretentious professors think that their Midas touch is required to learn the material properly. **** that. Give me what I need to know on paper, and I'll get it down. Nothing makes me more irate than professors that type up notes and leave blanks in them that need to be filled out. Then they test you on the crap that was in the blanks. WHY THE HELL DO THEY DO THAT? Just so they can go "Haha, now you MUST attend and pay attention to my rambling thoughts!!" Screw that.

Nobody in the room NEEDS to be lectured. Even if you are an "auditory" learner, you still probably take notes to memorize. I would wager the amount of people that tape record lectures and listen to them continually to memorize material is minimal. And if IF that person existed, the blanks in the written notes would be worthless to them because they are memorizing via hearing.

Even worse are the professors that present their material on powerpoint slides and just read through the lines on the slides.

Going to class is boring and annoying but it actually works.
 
The semesters I didn't go to class my GPA went up, I had less stress, I felt better, I had more money because I worked more. It was great. And do you know why this is? BECAUSE LECTURE IS WORTHLESS. I do not need powerpoints read to me. Nearly every professor I've ever had was like this. The only exceptions were my high school English and, later, college English professor, Mr. Yoak and my oncology instructor at WVU, Dr. Higa.

They actually taught. There were no slides. No nothing. They taught by asking questions - the Socratic method - the only true way to teach, the only true way to get a person's MIND into the material.

Interestingly, this is one of the few reasons I would want to become a professor. I'm positive I could do a better job than almost all of them. I'm not an academic, but if I am one thing I'm bloody creative - and, taking away the powerpoints and lecture notes they've typed up, I have taught the kids I've worked with more about drugs than many professors. Why? Because I can present **** to them in a creative manner that's hard to forget.

Tell a kid that Augmentin is a beta-lactam and a beta-lactamase inhibitor and they will yawn. Tell them that it gives bacteria a condition kinda like AIDS and it gets their attention. Then you ask them how they think it works - make them deduce how the drug works themselves. They will remember it forever.

Maybe it's just how I can and can't learn because I have untreated ADD and everybody else doesn't. Anyway, I'm rambling, time for me to shut the hell up.
 
lmao, thank you WVU...most of my friends look at me like i'm crazy and tell me i'm going to fail out of college because i skip most of my classes.....i'm passing with no problems.....and i'm glad there is someone out there that agrees with me on the whole "why go to class if i can learn as much if not more by reading the book that I probably have to read anyway..."
 
My "exciting" schedule:
Monday 8:30-12:20pm, 1:30-2:20pm
Tuesday: 8:30-11:20, 1:30-4:20
Wednesday 8:30am-12:20, 1:30-4:20
Thursday: 7:30am-12:20pm
Friday: 8:30-10:20, 1:30-4:20

Elective are so annoying. I have to get 12 hours over P1-P3 year. I'm going to have to load up next year, P-3.
 
Well, as Patmcd said (and we go to the same school in the same class), my schedule is:

Monday: exams (usually only one with occasional exception)
Tue: lecture from 9-12
Wed: lecture from 8-3 (with a class starting next week from 3-5, there's a break from 12-1, unless we get out of the 8 AM class earlier, as we often do)
Thur: lecture from 8:30-12 with an experiential thing from 1-2
Fri: lecture from 9-1-ish

I study more than Patmcd does. I usually spend 2-4 hours studying every day of the week. That just speaks to my own personal study style.
 
anyone else care to share? and please tell your school name (and year). as a bonus, are you happy with the choice you made to go to pharmacy school?
