I like the hospital where I am doing my internship. And I am quite happy to have an internship to begin with this summer. The problem is the Pharmacy techs do not like the fact that I round with the clinicians or do research in their offices. They prefer to have the interns' assgined certain techs workstations through out the day.I prefer to split the day between "helping out" the techs and working with the clinical pharmacists but now they are starting to make jokes about mywhereabouts in the ****f(they say I am sleeping somewhere in the patients room)This is making the work environment somewhat hostile. The pharmacists are mostly new grads or outsiders from agencies and don't want to get involved. My only worry is if this get to the director and make a bad impression. Advice?

One of the joys of being an intern is that everyone thinks you should do everything and no one believes that your time is less than infinite. You will probably never make the techs happy. Do your job. As long as your job is getting done, ignore the extra commentary. If your job does not include working with the clinical staff, address that with the DOP. If it does, ignore the peanut gallery.

I swear, hospital techs are the worst when it comes to gossip and drama... They form cliques, talk crap behind your back, and will smile to your face when you walk in the door. I hated working hospital, and I imagine rotations will be just as bad. Retail techs may gossip a lot, but at least in my experience it's not as problematic.

This is clearly a case of unclear job description. Do what your job say you should be doing and you should fine. Don't round if it doesnt say you should, don't work the robot if it's not listed. If you need clarification, talk to your supervisor.

Screw the techs. If I was you, I wouldn't even help out in the pharmacy and would be with the clinicians and doing research all day.

Anyone care to guess whose advice is more on point?

The truth is we do not get to make our job descriptions, as much as we would like to. In my experience, you can do all the "fun" stuff you want to - as long as your work is getting done.

Agreed.

Although I agree with owlegrad on getting the job done as your priority, I would approach the technicians/staff that are ridiculing you and tell them nicely but sternly that you do not appreciate the off-hand comments that are making your work environment hostile. Be kind, but firm. I would also ask the technicians what areas they need help with and what you can do as an intern and set boundaries with them. Tell them that you're here as an intern, and that after you've done your duties for the time being, you can help the techs out. That way, you've confronted them about the issue as well as give them the opportunity to voice their opinions.

If you try to attempt and fulfill their requests and they STILL gossip or make unnecessary comments, then I would go to your supervisor and mention the situation. Tell him/her that you approached and discussed the situation with the individual(s) and that you feel like the supervisor needs to step in to stop this.

Stand up for yourself, but don't screw anyone else over in the process. Like my old pharmacist used to say: cover your butt!!

I hope everything works out for you. 🙂

I am completely stumped. What is the censored word?? Even google has failed me. I should probably get some sleep

Edit: I thought of one! But it really doesn't fit...

I need further clarification.

I suspect it is an inversion problem - although that word is not work appropriate. Or five letters. OK, I am stumped. Maybe it is so bad, we don't want to know?

And how the ****f can you mistype SHIFT to get f? I don't get that at all.

If you transpose the last two letters...

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
Oh yeah and I didn't know what the censored word was too until I saw the previous comments!

Is it paid or volunteer or mandatory labor for you? I assume you're doing your fair share of tech work. When I was first starting out, I had similar issues because I was different, i wasn't instantly familiar with how everything worked, bc all you do is "hang out with pharmacists all day on the computers"...Haters gonna hate, and when you get something the techs don't, they get jealous. It even happens at the RPh level too...they just call it "project time" instead of "ippe internship".

I don't think your director will take their opinion too seriously unless they have pix of you napping somewhere or whatever. You should take tech work seriously though...it seems like they're hating because you haven't been there, done that.

I had the opposite experience...but kinda agree at the same time. I found that hospital people are more passive-agressive but at least mature and will smile...retail ppl would be real a-holes and crass but at least you know where you stand.

****f

Edit: Nothing happened.

Also, OP, your reply on the censored word isn't very helpful in my quest to figure out what it is.

EDIT: Yes it did, unless you put those stars in yourself.
