It largely depends on what state you're in. Some states require their techs to be certified with an exam, and others only require registration with the board of pharmacy.

In WV you have to have a sponsoring Pharmacy document 900 hours of direct supervision. Then you can sit for a two hour exam that cost about $130. You have to check each states board.

I'm in AZ and I know certain retail pharmacies will hire you as a trainee, which you need a pharmacy technician trainee license for, but they will pay for you to take the National certification exam to become a CPhT. Training on the job as well, obvs.
